FALL ON ROCK Alberta, Rocky Mountains, Mount Ishbel On O ctober 5, 1987, a party o f two clim bed the finger on M ount Ishbel. On the de­ scent, one of the clim bers tripped on an untied shoelace, causing him to tum ble down steep Class 4 terrain, severely cutting his knee and bruising his hip. U nable to walk, he spent a cold night out w hile his partner w ent for help. The injured clim ber was slung out by helicopter the follow ing m orning by the B anff N ational Park W arden Ser­ vice. Analysis Both o f the clim bers w ere experienced, and this section o f the descent is norm ally dow nclim bed unroped. At the tim e o f the accident, dusk w as rapidly approaching, and haste may have been a contributing factor. It is difficult to be a m ountain goat w ith your shoes untied!
