Hook The journey begins. Learning Revit families is a marathon. Ahead of you, 16 hours of training; and many more hours of diligent practice no one but you will see. You are learning a necessary skill that all Revit users should learn. A skill very few people have; complete this course and you will be an asset to any firm using Revit. Are you ready to elevate your game?

Introduction Families are the nuts and bolts of what makes Revit such a powerful design and CD creation product. through building a basic table you'll explore and begin to understand the Family Creator and Family creation process.

Purpose/Promise By the end of this session you will understand the following concepts / process Reference Plans – utilized to stretch or “Flex” the mass; what the mass is attached to Dimensions – control how those Reference Planes move Labeling – connects the Dimension to the Parameter Applying Parameters – what connects it all “Flexing” – testing that the Parameters work Masses – what is a mass, how we use them and why we use them (the solid object) “Test Project” – testing that the Family works

Value Transition I'm going to go over the major concepts behind creating families, giving you the why behind “Families”. Then I'll walk you through creating a table; hitting some of the major pit falls along the way so you don't. Knives and forks everyone, let's get started.

Reference Planes The basics of all elements that make up families Based on the Cartesian coordinate system Naming Reference Planes is important All geometry is attached to reference planes Center (Left/Right) + Center (Front/Back) = Insertion Point
14
focused training.
Dimensions Control how those Reference Planes move Dimension Widths, Lengths, Heights Equalized Dimensions - Center (Left/Right) + Center (Front/Back) Don't Over Dimension (over constrain the model)
15

Labeling Connects the Dimension to the Parameter Select the Dimension Apply the Label IF no operate Parameter, create one on the fly
16
focused training.
Applying Parameters What connects it all Found in the “Family Types” Dialog Box Some Parameters are not Modifiable (Template based) Some Parameters are Modifiable (all the ones you create) Naming Parameters is important
17
focused training.
Value Point This is all that makes up families. There is nothing but this.
Transition
These concepts have to be understood before we even begin the process of creating families. These steps are repeated time and time again to build all the pieces of the Family and make those pieces work correctly.

Masses What is a mass, how we use them and why we use them Solid + Void Forms = any shape possible Five kinds of Forms Geometry Tools: Join/Cut
21
focused training.
Sketch Mode + Mass Properties Masses are built off a base sketch (footprint) Rule = “Closed Loop” – Multiple loops are ok. Mass properties control the Extrusion Depth, Material and Visibility
22
focused training.
Align and Lock Sketch Lines and Extrusions are Aligned and Locked to Reference Planes Dimensions can be used as well (constrained ) Always “Flex” everything
23
focused training.
Value Point All massing is created in “sketch mode,” understand massing and you'll understand the process for creating other key components in Revit such as floors and roofs.
Transition
Once you understand the “Cha-Cha-Cha” you can build all the framework/Bones and Joint that will control how the family works. The framework (Reference planes) is the critical part of the family. We “Constrained” Masses and Line Work to the Reference Planes. Now when you “Flex” your model, the masses move too.

“The Cha-Cha-Cha” The basic step for all things family Draw Reference planes Dimension Reference Planes Label the dimension with the appropriate parameter
27
focused training.
“Flexing” Testing that the Parameters work Make sure that “it” does what it is suppose to From the “Family Types” Dialog – Larger and Smaller Values If you “ADDED” then you need to “Flex” = constantly “Flexing” the model
28
focused training.
“Test Project” Testing that the Family works Never load and untested family into a live project Checking that the family works as a whole Checking for Type Names and Family Names
29
focused training.
Value Point Sticking with these three rules/best practices is as important as knowing the 4 basic mathematical operations. All advance families are built using these same steps.
Transition
Thought without action is useless, action without thought is anarchy. You now have a greater knowledge of how Revit Families work as well as best practices for building them. Let's create a table, better make this a working table, it will support all your future Revit Families.

The Close Summary
Although this Table family is simple; the concepts presented and process demonstrated during its creation are the core of all things Family. We must learn to walk before we can run, we must crawl before we can walk. This was the first of 16 hours of training; we have a long way to go to fully understanding the power of families.
Transition to Q&A
Hierocracy in families How to build a family from scratch and test that it works correctly A Family is a collect of Family Types, Types hold Parameters, Parameters control Reference Planes
