Slips, Trips, & Falls Slips, trips, & falls is a leading cause of injury for employees of Bonner County and employees in the US. In the US; slips, trips, and falls account for 25% of injuries and 15% of all accidental deaths (US Dept of Labor). In Bonner County; slips, trips, & falls caused 38% of injuries in 2014 and 34% of work related injuries in 2015 (BCRM).

Definitions Slip: Too little friction or traction between feet and walking surface, resulting in loss of balance. (OSHA) Trip: Too much friction or traction between feet and walking surface, resulting in loss of balance. This is usually caused by the foot/ leg hitting an object that stops the foot from moving while the upper body continues moving (BCRM). Fall: A fall occurs when the upper body center of gravity is too far off center from the support below. A fall can be at the same level or to a lower level (such as off of a ladder or platform).

Causes Slips: Slips can be caused by liquids or powders on the floor, by the material of the floor (i.e. polished marble), or other factors of the floor, such as slopped, uneven floors. A common cause of slips for Bonner County employees is walking on ice covered surfaces with smooth soled shoes. Trips: Trips can be caused by clutter and obstructions, such as: hoses, cables, extension cords, open file cabinet drawers, changes in elevations such as steps and garbage. Falls: Falls occur when a person’s center of gravity moves beyond the support below (legs), and the person is unable to bring their legs under the center of gravity quickly enough (unable to regain balance). Falls and the ability to avoid a fall is affected by factors such as: eyesight, age, physical fitness, fatigue, stress, illness, medication/ drugs/ alcohol, distraction, carrying objects, and wearing proper shoes.

Prevention Behaviors: Diminished mental state from: fatigue, distractions, taking shortcuts, false assumptions and/or lack of awareness of hazardous conditions. Conditions: Hazards such as poor housekeeping, lighting, surface condition and weather.
