Ruby Cup Stays in Ames
ALUMNI NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012
Iowa State University was
awarded the Ruby Cup for 2011. Members Pat Kolker, WIlliam Vincent, Colton Lindemann, and Luke Belzer all attended FarmHouse Leadership Institute where they were able to accept the Ruby Cup on behalf of the chapter.
The group of FarmHouse members who went on the ski trip took a group picture at the top of the mountain.
Ski Trip 2012 A
group
of
24
FarmHouse
members
made
the
trip
out
to
Dillon,
Colorado
for
a
ski
trip
at
Copper
Mountain.
The
group
left
on
January
2,
2012
from
Iowa
and
made
the
drive
out
to
Colorado
for
a
four
day
adventure
on
the
slopes.
They
were
able
to
pick
up
their
skis
and
snowboards
when
they
arrived
Monday
evening
so
that
they
could
head
straight
to
the
mountain
the
next
day. Some
who
came
with
had
never
skied
before,
so
they
used
day
one
to
get
acclimated
to
skiing
and
snowboarding.
Many
split
off
and
skied
in
small
groups
for
the
day.
After
skiing,
it
was
nice
to
just
head
back
to
our
cabins
FarmHouse Alumni group on Yahoo
and
relax.
As
the
week
progressed,
groups
switched
and
grew
in
size.
It
was
both
enjoyable
and
entertaining
skiing
in
a
large
group.
Thursday
we
met
up
with
our
advisor
Josh
Hale
at
the
top
of
the
mountain
where
we
were
able
to
get
a
large
group
picture.
By
the
end
of
the
week,
those
who
had
never
skied
before
had
become
quite
adept
at
skiing
and
snowboarding,
and
they
became
quite
confident
with
themselves.
Throughout
the
trip,
we
made
sure
to
meet
at
noon,
grab
lunch
together,
and
regroup
each
day.
On
a
few
occasions,
we
had
the
pleasure
of
watching
a
few
of
our
friends
attempt
the
half
pipe
while
we
ate
lunch
at
the
lodge.
Saturday
the
group
headed
for
home,
reluctant
to
leave
the
mountains
of
Colorado.
Everyone
on
the
trip
had
a
good
time,
and
those
first‐time
skiers
said
they
couldn’t
wait
to
encourage
others
to
come
with
next
year.
All
in
all,
it
was
an
enjoyable
trip
to
the
slopes
of
Copper
Mountain.

New Member Education On January 22nd, 2012 we initiated 19 new members into our fraternity and looking back on what it has taken to get to that moment has truly been a rewarding experience for both Brother Pringnitz and myself. At the start of the school year we welcomed one of the most diverse classes this chapter has seen when it comes to age, major, and background; however, now after a little more than three months these men have found their niche within the house and fit in very well. In fact it caught us both by surprise when they, as a class, identified Unity as the most important FarmHouse value in our first New Member Education seminar. Since then they have done everything to exceed our expectations. Two goals Andy and I both had when we were elected to this position was to incorporate the leadership responsibilities we had has freshmen going through new member education and to establish a New Member Feedback Survey to continue to adapt and change the program to ensure that it is the best it can be. While many of these responsibilities are fulfilled in the spring such as planning Winter House Party and Pledge Trip, this class has already came up with an incredible new physical program as a Physical Committee as well

as plan a Pledge Skip to Minneapolis, MN which I am sure won’t be forgotten. This has already lead to bigger and better things as four new members have already been elected to executive positions for this upcoming Spring 2012 semester. Lastly, from the feedback survey we found that new members preferred the seminars with alumni than any other seminars such as those with Reid Crawford (year??), Dr. Steve Lonegran (year??), Tim Becker (??), and Ben Schmidt (??). Also who could forget the tour of the Alumni Center given by Jeff Johnson to give our new members, as well as Andy and myself, a great sense of Cyclone Pride. In conclusion, it has been a real treat to serve as New Member Educator this past fall, sharing the pride and passion I have for this organization, and guiding these young men to becoming successful FarmHouse men. I am anxious to see how they turn out and the success they will bring in the next four years.

FarmHouse Leadership Institute In the inaugural year of the institute model of this leadership development program;
the New Member Educator, Recruitment Chair, Treasurer, and President were invited to Kansas City, MO for a weekend of training and brotherhood. It was so nice to see brothers from across the country from all 28 chapters and to exchange ideas with them.
The new institute model included a significant amount of learning about values and the responsibilities that come with being a leader. This was facilitated through several large group sessions joining together the 150 undergraduate attendees and several small group sessions where we were able to have more intimate discussions about what we were learning. Led by Rick Barnes (Texas Tech ’82) and North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) staff member Ben Pendry; they fostered within all the attendees a greater sense of community within the Greek system. We also learned valuable lessons about courage, trust, and living our ritual.
Traditionally, FarmHouse Fraternity International also holds its awards ceremony for the previous year’s Ruby Cup programming awards during the weekend of the FarmHouse Leadership Institute. This year the awards ceremony was held inside the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, also home to the College Basketball Experience in downtown Kansas City near the Power and Light District. The Iowa State chapter was highly awarded walking away with first place plaques in eight of the twelve programming categories including; Alumni Relations, Spiritual Development, Intellectual and Scholastic Development, Physical Development, Community Service, Total Member Education, Risk Management, and Social and Moral Development. In addition, we were awarded the Chapter Award of Excellence for the Green Division and for the second year in a row, the Ruby Cup!
As current President of the Iowa State chapter of FarmHouse Fraternity I want to
thank you for your contributions to my ongoing education to make me a better leader to serve my current and alumni brothers. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like a house tour, do not hesitate to contact me at
