FC Peoria hosts first ever college soccer summer training program Observation opportunity for FC Players and their families FC Peoria is hosting the first of its kind Peoria area summer soccer training program for college players. This program is for current college players as well as incoming college freshmen across all levels of collegiate soccer. FC families are invited to feel free to drop in to observe the training this summer. The club’s director of coaching, Stefan King, will lead the program. King was selected from over 500 applicants and honored last year as one of America’s best coaches under the age of 30 with the prestigious 30 Under 30 Coaching Award presented the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the world’s largest soccer coaches’ organization. King will be assisted by FC Peoria director of soccer operations and former NCAA lead scorer, Brian O’Malley. King who has coached at Western Illinois University, ICC and Bradley says the program was partially driven by some of the success that FC Peoria has experienced. “Nationally only three percent of high school soccer players play at the college level yet we’ve seen a large number of players who started out at FC Peoria and got their fundamentals make it to that level. This year’s senior class in particular had an unusually high percentage who moved to that next level including Cameron Behm, Allie Cross, Alex Gallup ,Trey Knighton, Blake Lewis, Samantha Morgan, TJ Rea, Adam Restrepo, and Jonathon Wuebben. These athletes and other athletes home for the summer need to be prepared when the season starts which is shortly after the start of school,” King said. Continued on page 2

According to King the program consists of a myriad of drills aimed at improving the five pillars of soccer training. “Technical, tactical, physical, psychological and intangibles are all part of soccer player’s development and we target all of these concepts during our training sessions,” King said. The four Rs of soccer are focused on as well. “Running with the ball, receiving the ball, ball retention, and releasing the ball along with ball manipulation and passing patterns are some of the skills we will reinforce in our sessions.” The program also provides athletes with base line measures of their physical fitness. Scores are recorded both prior to the start of training as well as at the end. The program started June 13th and will finish August 1st. Players will train twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 am to 7:30 am. King said the early start date is to accommodate the athletes who have regular summer jobs, as well as utilizing the cooler morning temperatures during the summer months. The cost is $25 per session. Participants should bring soccer shoes, running sneakers, a towel and a water bottle. Those interested in more information can email King at [email protected]

Kick it forward! Success! Abby Johnson led a soccer equipment collection at FC Peoria to benefit the over 250 children participating each Spring in the Morton Square Park program sponsored by First United Methodist Church of Peoria. The program heavily relies on volunteer coaches and donated equipment. The program was preparing for its 18th season. Thanks to the generosity of our club families 30 pairs of cleats, 50 pairs of socks, 30 shin guards, and a couple pairs of goalie gloves were collected!
