Step 1: Puppy Blocks
Sew (1) each of the fussy cut 10 ½” square puppy blocks to a 10 ½” x 16 ½” patch, alternating sides (per the picture) so that there are (3) puppies on the right and (3) puppies on the left. Press seams to the large patch. Sew a 2 ½” x 26 ½” sashing strip to the top of each block created above. Press seams to the sashing. Sew the blocks together to create the first vertical section of the quilt. Add the last sashing strip at the bottom and press to the sashing. Measure the sides, cut two vertical sashing strips from the sets made and sew to each side. Press to the sashing.
Step 2: Letter Blocks
Make HST blocks: Draw a diagonal line corner to corner on the back of the (6) light 3” square letter blocks. Place right sides together on top of the (6) dark print 3” letter blocks. Sew a scant ¼” seam on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the line. Press to the dark print. Square each block to 2 ½”. Yield (12) Half Square Triangle Blocks (HST). Make (3) P Blocks ‐ Using the block diagram as a guide, sew as follows: Sew one HST block created above to a 2 ½” x 4 ½” light strip. Press to the strip. Make (6) unit A Sew one 2 ½” light square to a 2 ½” x 4 ½” dark print strip. Press to the square. Make (3) unit B Sew a Unit A to the top and bottom of a Unit B. Press to the dark print center assembly. Make (3) Sew this complete A/B/A assembly to one 4 1/2” x 6 ½” dark print block. Press to the dark print block Sew a light 2 ½” x 10 ½” strip to the left of the assembly above. Press to the light strip Sew a dark print 1 ½” x 10 ½” dark print strip to the right and left sides. Press to the dark strip. Sew a 2 ½” x 10 ½” sashing strip to the top of each block. Press to the sashing. Set aside. Make (1) U Block ‐ Using the block diagram as a guide, sew as follows: Sew one HST block created above to a 2 ½” x 8 ½” light strip. Press to the strip. Make (2) units A Sew one 2 ½” x 4 ½” light strip to a 4 ½” x 8 ½” dark print strip. Press to the light strip. Make (1) unit B Sew a Unit A to each side of the Unit B. Make (1) Y Block ‐ Using the block diagram as a guide, sew as follows: Sew one HST block created above to a 2 ½” x 4 ½” light strip. Press to the strip. Make (2) units A Sew two HST units together, being careful to place the colors in the correct position per the layout diagram at right. Sew the joined HST unit to a 4 ½” dark print square. Press to the dark print. Make 1 unit B Sew a Unit A to each side of the Unit B. Press to the dark print center Unit B assembly. Make (1) Sew a dark print 1 ½” x 6 ½” dark print strip to the right and left sides. Press to the dark strip. Sew a 4 ½” dark print square to each side of a 2 ½” x 4 ½” light strip. Press to the dark print. Join to the bottom of the assembly completed above. Press the seam toward the bottom assembly. Sew a 2 ½” x 10 ½” sashing strip to the top of the block. Press to the sashing. Set aside. Step 3: Heart Block Make HST Blocks: Draw a diagonal line corner to corner on the back of the (1) Red 6” square heart block. Place right sides together on top of the (1) dark print 6” block. Sew a scant ¼” seam on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the line. Press to the dark print. Square each block to 5 ½”. Yield (2) Half Square Triangle Blocks (HST). Make (1) Heart Block ‐ Using the block diagram as a guide, sew as follows: Sew the (2) HST blocks together to create the bottom of the heart. Press to the right. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the (4) 2 ½” square dark print blocks. Place on the upper corners of each 5 ½” red heart square RST. Sew on the drawn line. Trim seam allowance to ¼”. Open press to the dark print. Make (2) Sew the two upper heart blocks together and press the seam to the left. Sew the upper heart assembly to the lower heart assembly. Press the seam to the upper heart assembly. Sew a 2 ½” x 10 ½” sashing strip to the top of the block. Press to the sashing. Set aside. Step 4: Assemble letter block panel
Being careful to keep the letters in order, sew letters together in a vertical strip spelling out the word ‘PUPPY’. Press the seams to the sashing strips. Sew the heart block to the letter strip created above at the bottom. Press the seam to the sashing strip. Add the last sashing strip at the bottom and press to the sashing. Measure the sides, cut two vertical sashing strips from the sets made and sew to each side. Press to the sashing. (Note: This dimension should be the same as the vertical dimension of the Puppy Block Assembly made in Step 1.)

Step 5: Assemble the Quilt Center
Measure the puppy panel assembly vertical dimension and the letter panel assembly vertical dimension. Cut the 8 ½” wide center panel strip assembly created above to match this dimension, making adjustments as needed. Sew the center panel to the right side of the Puppy Assembly. Press the seam to the sashing. Sew the Letter Panel Assembly to the left side of the center panel. Press to the sashing.
Step 6: Add Borders
Measure, cut and add the inner border side strips, cutting from the strip sets created above. Press to the border. Measure and cut the inner border top and bottom strips using the remaining set of strips. Sew to the top and bottom and press seams to the border. Measure, cut and add the outer border sides and then the top and bottom outer borders, cutting from the strip sets created above. Press to the border.
Layer, quilt as desired and bind.
