He has authored seven books and has lectured widely throughout the United States and around the world. He has delivered keynote addresses at both the national conventions of Agudath Israel of America and Torah U'mesorah as well as the Siyum Hashas in 2012 at Met Life Stadium. His teaching has inspired his students, who now number in the thousands.

Clothes Maketh the Priest Dr. Erica Brown, Community Scholar We open up our sedra with the command for the kohanim to wear bigdei kodesh - holy or sanctified garments. “Make sacral vestments for your brother Aaron for dignity and adornment.” [28:2] This demand is not self-evident. If you were asked to make holy clothing, what would you do – besides taking sewing lessons – to guide your fulfillment of this elusive request? What ensues among medieval commentators is a discussion about what this expression means. Do the clothes have to be made with holy intent? Yes. Do the clothes have to serve in a holy space? Yes. Do those who make them have to be extraordinary in some way? Yes. Rabbinic discussion “covers” all of these arenas to satisfy this high bar of clothing production. Only on Yom Kippur was the High Priest to wear something else – bigdei lavan – the white garments of purity described in Vayikra 16:4. We have evidence from Josephus, rabbinic testimonies and Ben Sira – a book of the Apocrypha – that the Cohen Gadol, the High Priest, looked magnificent, a theme captured in our mussaf prayers of Yom Kippur in that tuneful favorite “Marei Cohen” – like a morning star, like the full moon on a festival day. His appearance was aided by the relief that his atonement on behalf of his household and the entire nation was accepted. Nahmanides on 28:2 adds that the look the text was trying to achieve was that of the royalty who existed during the days of the Torah’s composition. All would have been in awe of the king/priest. This adds yet another dimension to the definition of holiness: the clothing had to inspire reverence form an aesthetic point of view. the achievement of holiness. In a mishna in BT Yoma, there is a lengthy passage detailing the cost of the various type of linens required in the priests’ white wear [34b]. While we are unsure of how much 12 minas or 800 zuz are, by the sound if it, these clothes were worthy of Saville Row prices. The mishna concludes with a telling line: “All that at the charge of the community, and if he wanted to spend more of his own he could do so.” What made the clothing holy was, in part, that the cohen expensed it to the entire community. We paid for the clothing so that the cohen could truly represent each and every one of us in his service. He was permitted to add his own flourish should he have the means, but the baseline costs were absorbed by all. Holiness rests in all of us and the cohen, to represent us effectively, had to spend our funds to achieve his grandeur. The closest way to understand this is perhaps through my favorite FDR quote, first said on April 14, 1938 and enshrined in his memorial: "I never forget that I live in a house owned by all the American people and that I have been given their trust." We adjust accordingly: “I never forget that I wear the clothes of all the Jewish people and that when I pray in their holy sanctuary, I have been given their trust.”

Jewish Center Assistant Rabbi Candidates Shabbat, March 4-5 RABBI MARK GLASS, a native of Manchester, England, spent two years studying in Yeshivat Hakotel in Israel after High School. Following two years at the University of Manchester, he transferred to Yeshiva University, earning a BA in philosophy. Currently, he is completing his MA in Jewish philosophy at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and his semikhah at RIETS. He has spent the last year and a half as Rabbinic Intern at Congregation Ahavas Achim in Highland Park, New Jersey where, among other things, he delivers weekly shiurim, regular derashot, and chairs the Education Committee. Rabbi Mark is an avid reader, particular of non-fiction, and also does graphic design in his spare time. He lives with his wife Ruthy, a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Rutgers University, and their 7-month-old son, Yair, in Highland Park, New Jersey.
Sunday, March 11-12 RABBI EFFY UNTERMAN is the Associate Rabbi at Congregation Torat Emet in Columbus, OH, where he oversees the educational platform and programs of the synagogue, engaging young professionals across Columbus, and working to cultivate a warm and welcoming atmosphere to strengthen the synagogue’s community. Prior to joining Torat Emet, he and his wife, Rivkie, lived in New York, where he received a Wexner Graduate Fellowship for Jewish leadership and academic achievement in his work at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Education and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He has authored seven books and has lectured widely throughout the United States and around the world. He has delivered keynote addresses at both the national conventions of Agudath Israel of America and Torah U'mesorah as well as the Siyum Hashas in 2012 at Met Life Stadium. His teaching has inspired his students, who now number in the thousands.

Clothes Maketh the Priest Dr. Erica Brown, Community Scholar We open up our sedra with the command for the kohanim to wear bigdei kodesh - holy or sanctified garments. “Make sacral vestments for your brother Aaron for dignity and adornment.” [28:2] This demand is not self-evident. If you were asked to make holy clothing, what would you do – besides taking sewing lessons – to guide your fulfillment of this elusive request? What ensues among medieval commentators is a discussion about what this expression means. Do the clothes have to be made with holy intent? Yes. Do the clothes have to serve in a holy space? Yes. Do those who make them have to be extraordinary in some way? Yes. Rabbinic discussion “covers” all of these arenas to satisfy this high bar of clothing production. Only on Yom Kippur was the High Priest to wear something else – bigdei lavan – the white garments of purity described in Vayikra 16:4. We have evidence from Josephus, rabbinic testimonies and Ben Sira – a book of the Apocrypha – that the Cohen Gadol, the High Priest, looked magnificent, a theme captured in our mussaf prayers of Yom Kippur in that tuneful favorite “Marei Cohen” – like a morning star, like the full moon on a festival day. His appearance was aided by the relief that his atonement on behalf of his household and the entire nation was accepted. Nahmanides on 28:2 adds that the look the text was trying to achieve was that of the royalty who existed during the days of the Torah’s composition. All would have been in awe of the king/priest. This adds yet another dimension to the definition of holiness: the clothing had to inspire reverence form an aesthetic point of view. the achievement of holiness. In a mishna in BT Yoma, there is a lengthy passage detailing the cost of the various type of linens required in the priests’ white wear [34b]. While we are unsure of how much 12 minas or 800 zuz are, by the sound if it, these clothes were worthy of Saville Row prices. The mishna concludes with a telling line: “All that at the charge of the community, and if he wanted to spend more of his own he could do so.” What made the clothing holy was, in part, that the cohen expensed it to the entire community. We paid for the clothing so that the cohen could truly represent each and every one of us in his service. He was permitted to add his own flourish should he have the means, but the baseline costs were absorbed by all. Holiness rests in all of us and the cohen, to represent us effectively, had to spend our funds to achieve his grandeur. The closest way to understand this is perhaps through my favorite FDR quote, first said on April 14, 1938 and enshrined in his memorial: "I never forget that I live in a house owned by all the American people and that I have been given their trust." We adjust accordingly: “I never forget that I wear the clothes of all the Jewish people and that when I pray in their holy sanctuary, I have been given their trust.”

Jewish Center Assistant Rabbi Candidates Shabbat, March 4-5 RABBI MARK GLASS, a native of Manchester, England, spent two years studying in Yeshivat Hakotel in Israel after High School. Following two years at the University of Manchester, he transferred to Yeshiva University, earning a BA in philosophy. Currently, he is completing his MA in Jewish philosophy at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies and his semikhah at RIETS. He has spent the last year and a half as Rabbinic Intern at Congregation Ahavas Achim in Highland Park, New Jersey where, among other things, he delivers weekly shiurim, regular derashot, and chairs the Education Committee. Rabbi Mark is an avid reader, particular of non-fiction, and also does graphic design in his spare time. He lives with his wife Ruthy, a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Rutgers University, and their 7-month-old son, Yair, in Highland Park, New Jersey.
Sunday, March 11-12 RABBI EFFY UNTERMAN is the Associate Rabbi at Congregation Torat Emet in Columbus, OH, where he oversees the educational platform and programs of the synagogue, engaging young professionals across Columbus, and working to cultivate a warm and welcoming atmosphere to strengthen the synagogue’s community. Prior to joining Torat Emet, he and his wife, Rivkie, lived in New York, where he received a Wexner Graduate Fellowship for Jewish leadership and academic achievement in his work at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Education and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary.
