field hockey Season Outlook The 2007 Oberlin field hockey team has the talent and experience necessary to help the program return to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. Head Coach Deb Ranieri’s Yeowomen look to battle for their third NCAC title and second NCAA tournament appearance under her leadership. The field hockey squad had a good showing in 2006 with six wins, including four in the NCAC, after earning a trip to the national tournament in 2005. Last season, the Yeowomen also excelled off the field as they received All-Academic team honors. With only two players graduating, the young Yeowomen are in great position to build upon last season’s success and return to championship form. The potential for the 2007 edition of the Oberlin field hockey team is limitless as it welcomes back talent at all positions. Tremendous offensive fire power will help pace the Yeowomen this season. Junior Abigail Brox and sophomore Catherine Meredith are a potent scoring duo up front. Senior midfielder Christine Politis and Senior forward Ashley Allen are dynamic players who contribute to the offense and control the game in the midfield. Brox scored 10 goals along with two assists on her way to earning NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors in 2005 and first team All-NCAC honors in 2006. She was sixth in the league in points and goals per game. Meredith had a stellar rookie season with the Yeowomen, leading the team in goals with 15 and earning All-NCAC honorable mention accolades. Politis is a dominant player on both sides of the ball, as she knocked in three goals and dished out four assists last season en route to earning first team All-NCAC honors. Allen was an All-NCAC second team performer whose speedy and controlled play in the right wing was key to the Yeowomen’s success. She finished last season with seven goals and seven assists. Additionally, Senior Kaitlin Barrer returns this season at midfield after studying abroad. Defensively, the team will be anchored by senior goalkeeper Lauren Malinowski and junior defender Holly Sloofman. Malinowski was a force in the cage last season, amassing an NCACleading 205 saves and being named honorable mention all-conference. Sloofman started all 17 games in 2006 and led the NCAC with an impressive 12 defensive saves. Sophomore Maddie Fierstein also returns on defense after starting all season as a first-year player. The Yeowomen open up their season at Transylvania University on August 31. Oberlin’s first league game is at home on September 5 against Ohio Wesleyan University.
