Wins against Fiji (24-13) and Tonga (28-27) saw Japan follow in the footsteps of the Junior All Blacks, New Zealand Maori and Samoa and win their first Pacific Nations Cup last year. HIROTOKI ONOZAWA will be the most experienced player on the pitch with 72 caps, he recently joined Daisuke Ohata (who holds the Japan try-scoring record with 69) in an exclusive club as the only two Japanese internationals to have ever scored 50 or more tries for their country. ONOZAWA is also second on the list for most appearances for Japan behind Yokio Motoki with 79 caps. Japan are fresh from winning their fifth consecutive Asian Five Nations tournament. Their emphatic 67-0 win over Hong Kong was their 20th consecutive bonus point win in the competition, giving new coach Eddie Jones a 100% winning record since taking over following Rugby World Cup 2011. Jones’ charges have scored 313 points during the first four games of his tenure, conceding just 11 points. Japan have averaged nine tries per match under Eddie Jones. They’ve scored 37 tries in total in his first four games in charge, converting 30 of them. Interestingly, they’ve yet to score a penalty. Fiji loosehead prop GRAHAM DEWES wins his 25th cap for his country on Tuesday yet will be the most experienced Fiji player on the pitch. In total Fiji have fielded seven new caps, and another three players who have ten caps or less. DEWES, No.8 NETANI TALEI and centre VERENEKI GONEVA are the only three Fiji players with more than 20 caps. Fiji’s backline contains a total of 25 caps between them and is littered with new caps (five in total). Centre VERENEKI GONEVA is the old hand with 22 caps, while NIKOLA MATAWALU is the second most senior player in the Fiji backline – with three caps. Japan replacement RYAN NICOLAS will break through the 200 point barrier if he scores seven points or more against Fiji. The Australian-born centre has amassed 193 points for his adopted country since making his debut against Korea in April, 2008, scoring nine tries and 53 conversions.

Tuesday’s clash between Fiji and Japan is the 14th match between the two sides. Fiji have been victorious on 10 of those occasions with Japan winning the other three. This is reflected in the recent meetings between the two sides, with Fiji winning four out of the last five encounters. Japan were the most recent winners in matches between the two sides, beating Fiji 24-13 in a Pacific Nations Cup match in Lautoka last year. Fiji’s biggest win over Japan came in 2000, when they beat the home side 47-22 in Tokyo. Two of Japan’s wins over Fiji came within a week of each other. They beat a touring Fiji side 24-18 on the 8th of May 1994 and followed that up seven days later with 20-8 win. Japan’s biggest margin of victory over Fiji was in that 1994 Test, when they managed that 20-8 win over their neighbours. Their record points tally however came in a defeat to Fiji – when they were beaten 40-39 by the island nation in 2009. Only one drop goal has ever been scored in games between the two sides. That came in a Rugby World Cup 2003 pool game, when Kobe Steel flyhalf Andy Miller kicked a drop goal for Japan in a 41-13 loss to Fiji in Townsville.

Man in the Middle •

Ireland’s John Lacey makes his 5th appearance as an international referee when he officiates the Pacific Nations Cup match between Fiji and Japan on Tuesday. Lacey made his debut in 2009 when he refereed the France A versus Romania.

Tonga’s Kurt Morath (95 points)has the opportunity in the Pacific Nations Cup clash against Samoa to overtake Fiji’s Taniela Rawaga (103 points)and Japan’s James Arlidge (96 points) and become the leading PNC points-scorer of all time. Japan’s HITOSHI ONO will equal the record for most PNC appearances when he lines out against Fiji. ONO will join Samoa’s Filipo Lavea Levi and Sunia Koto on 19 appearances. Fiji and Japan are playing in their 25th Pacific Nations Cup match. Fiji have won 11 of those games while Japan are looking for their eighth victory in the competition. Japan have conceded more points in the PNC than any other team – 827. With 115 tries against, they’re also the only team to have conceded more than 100 tries over the duration of the competition.

Form guide •

Fiji and Japan have endured contrasting fortunes and calendars since last year’s Rugby World Cup. In total Fiji have now won just three of their last 18 Tests, including a couple of wins against Tonga and one against Namibia. Japan finished off their Rugby World Cup with a 23-23 draw against Canada in Napier and four wins on the trot under new coach Eddie Jones in the Asian Five Nations should give them the edge in terms of confidence. Fiji on the other hand, will look to this month’s Pacific Nations Cup to rebuild after a hugely disappointing effort at Rugby World Cup 2011. One solitary win, a 49-25 victory over Namibia in Rotorua was all they had to show for their efforts, before succumbing to heavy defeats against South Africa (49-3), Samoa (27-7) and Wales (66-0). Fiji’s poor run of results is reflected in its points and tries totals for the last five games. The Pacific island nation have conceded 199 points and 22 tries in their last five games, compared to Japan’s 34 and four tries. However Japan’s figures reflect the fact that four of their last five games have been at this year’s 2012 Asian Five Nations against a lower level of opposition.

New Kids on the Block •

• •

Fiji have announced no fewer than seven new caps in their side to play Japan on Tuesday. Lock APISAI NAIKATINI, flanker ILIESA RATUVA, flyhalf SETAREKI KOROILAGILAGI, wings WATISONI VOTU and WAISEA VUIDRAVUWALU, centre ISAKI KATONIBAU and fullback SIMELI KONIFEREDI all make their first starts for their country. In addition, replacements SEREMAIA NAUREURE, BENEDITO KOROI and ALOISIO BUTONIDUALEVU will all make their debuts if they come off the bench. Japan, by contrast, have no players making a debut but they do field a first XV with seven players with 10 caps or less. Japan has over twice as many caps on the pitch as Fiji (269 to Fiji’s 110) yet still manages to have a younger average age (27 to Fiji’s 28) than their opposition.

Did you know? •

Just two of the Fiji side ply their trade in Europe. VERENEKI GONEVA plays with Tarbes while No.8 and captain NETANI TALEI plays with Edinburgh. Replacement ALOISIO BUTONIDUALEVA is another playing in France, with newly promoted Top 14 side Grenoble. Eleven of Japan’s starting XV come from just two clubs – Suntory Sungoliath provide six of Japans starting XV while Toshiba Brave Lupus provide another five.
