KEY FACTS
HEAD TO HEAD
•
•
•
•
•
Wednesday’s match between Fiji and the USA is the fifth time these two sides have met. Both sides have played in Nagoya once before, with Japan as their opponents. Tomorrow’s clash will be the first time the two sides have met in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. It is also the first time the two teams have met at Mizuho Park Rugby Ground, Nagoya, Japan. It will be Fiji’s 30th match in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Since the tournament was established, Fiji have accumulated a 50% win percentage, winning 14, drawing one and losing 14 matches. USA replacement TODD CLEVER will win his 50th cap if he comes off the bench against Fiji. CLEVER, who made his debut in a 30-26 loss to Canada in 2005, becomes only the sixth American to win a half century of caps for the Eagles. Prop Mike McDonald is the current record caps holder for the USA, with 67.
•
• •
The last bout between these two teams took place during Rugby World Cup 2003, with the Fijians narrowly beating the Americans 19 – 18. The Eagles scored a try in the 82nd minute, but failed to convert, losing the game with the last kick of the match. Fiji have scored 88 points in all competitions against the USA, and have managed to score nine tries in the process. In contrast, the Eagles have scored 73 points against Fiji, but have only scored 6 tries in response. The first meeting between Fiji and the USA was in 1998. Fiji ran out 18-9 victors in Suva. There is very little between the packs in terms of size on Wednesday. Fiji will have a 2kg per man weight advantage up front, weighing in at an average 111kg per man. The USA’s average weight in the forwards is 109kg per man.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE •
•
The only time the USA have managed to beat a Pacific Nations team was in 1999 during the Pacific Rim Championship, when they beat both Fiji 25-14 and Tonga 30-10. Fiji require another three successful penalty goals in order to hit 50 in Pacific Nations Cup history. Tonga lead the way here, having kicked a total of 57 penalty goals in the competition.
FORM GUIDE •
•
USA have only managed to win only one of their last five matches, and have not managed to win at home since their 36-20 win over Georgia at Infinity Park, Colorado in June 2012. They are still searching for their first win in this year’s Pacific Nations Cup. Fiji have managed to win three of their last five matches.

Fiji Captain AKAPUSI QUERA wins his 30th cap on Wednesday. QUERA made his Test debut in a 36-10 loss to Samoa in 2005. He plays the USA for the first time in his career on Wednesday. Prop NICK WALLACE and No. 8 CAM DOLAN make their respective debuts for the USA against Fiji on Wednesday. NETANI TALEI of Fiji plays his 21st Pacific Nations Cup match of his career, pushing him into third on the all-time PNC appearance records. TALEI is behind Hitoshi Ono and Takashi Kikutani of Japan, who are tied on 23 appearances. Fiji’s SEREMAIA BAI makes his 44th Test appearance for his country on Wednesday, making him Fiji’s most experienced starting player by some distance. The game will see BAI move into the top ten of Fiji’s most experienced players of all time. Nicky Little remains the most experienced Fijian of all time, amassing 71 Test caps during his career.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE •
Greg Garner of England will referee the match between Fiji and USA on Wednesday, and will make his eighth appearance as a Test referee. He turns 33 on June 26.
•
• • •
Fiji field a more experienced starting XV with a total of 201 caps, which is almost double the USA’s total of 112. Fiji also field an older starting XV with an average age of 29 compared to the USA’s average age of 25. The comparative inexperience of the two sides can be seen in the numbers of players with single digit caps numbers. Thirteen of the USA’s starting line-up have 10 caps or less. Only prop ERIC FRY (15 caps) and Eagles’ Captain LOUIS STANFILL (39 CAPS) have more. Following in the same vein, 12 of Fiji’s first XV have less than 20 Test caps each. The USA have no shortage of experience on the bench; there are 210 Test caps between the eight replacements. Fiji’s SIRELI BOBO will be the oldest player on the pitch on Friday, aged 37. The USA’s SEAMUS KELLY will be the youngest player on the field, having turned 22 only a fortnight ago.
