Facts & Figures KEY FACTS

HEAD TO HEAD

• •

With Canada (13 pts) having played their four matches, it’s winner-take-all at the Prince Chichibu Memorial stadium on Sunday as Fiji (11 pts) take on Tonga (10pts) for the Pacific Nations Cup 2013 title. Fiji need another four points to reach 600 points scored in matches in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Tonga also only need 15 points to reach the tally of 600 points scored in the tournament. They could also reach the 70 try milestone for this tournament if they score three on Sunday. Fiji’s SEREMAIA BAI requires just one more successful penalty to overtake Japan’s James Arlidge and become the second highest penalty goal scorer in Pacific Nations Cup history. BAI currently sits with Arlidge on 20 penalty goals, 10 behind Tongan record holder Kurt Morath. You have to go back to July 1992 when Fiji last failed to last score a try in a game against Tonga. In comparison, July 1989 was the last time Tonga last failed to cross the line in this fixture against Fiji.

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE •

• • •

Sunday’s game will be the 12th time the Fijians have played on Japanese soil. They have only lost three of these previous matches there, against Samoa (29-26) in 2012, and against Japan (24-18 and 20-8) in 1994. They have also never failed to score a try in Tests on Japanese soil. Tonga have played 13 previous games in Japan and have lost five of these encounters. This will be the first time Fiji and Tonga have met at this ground. Tonga have not won two in a row in this competition since it began in 2006, which included a 57-16 win over Japan and a narrow 24-23 win over Fiji. Tonga have only failed to score a try once in their last 20 matches. This was against Samoa in Nagoya last year, where they lost 20-18. Fiji, on the other hand, have failed on three separate occasions to cross the line in their last 20 matches. The most occasion came against an Ireland XV in Limerick in November 2012, when they lost 53-0. NETANI TALEI wins his 28th Test cap for Fiji on Sunday. TALEI made his debut for Fiji in a 24-23 win against Tonga in June 2006.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE •

JONATHON WHITE of New Zealand will referee the match between Fiji and Tonga on Sunday. It will be WHITE’S second Test match, having made his debut in the Japan and Canada clash on Wednesday.

Sunday’s match between Fiji and Tonga will be the 86th time these two sides have met in Test history and the eighth in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Fiji have long been the dominant force in this clash and have notched up 56 wins compared to Tonga’s 26. There have been three draws: in 1988, 1967 and 1924. Fiji have won three out of the last five meetings between the two nations. The most recent meeting was last year when Fiji ran out 29-17 winners. The first time these two sides met was in 1924 in Nuku A’lofa, Tonga. Tonga beat Fiji 9-6 that day. Fiji’s biggest margin of victory against the Tongans came back in August 1982 when they won 39-4 in Suva. Tonga’s largest victory over the Fijians happened in July 2011 with a 45-21 victory in Lautoka. In the eight previous meetings in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup, Fiji have managed to score 21 tries and 181 points; the Tongans have scored 24 tries and 194 points in response.

FORM GUIDE •

Tonga have won four of their last five matches, including a 18-9 victory in Carson against the USA last week. In their last five matches, Tonga have managed to score 15 tries. The Fijians have won three out of their last five games. Those wins have come against Georgia (24-19), Japan (22-8) and the USA (35-19).

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? • •

Both sides field relatively inexperienced sides, with Fiji’s 249 Test caps edging out Tonga’s 178 caps. 34-year-old SEREMAIA BAI wins his 45th Test cap on Sunday, making him the most experienced man of either side on the pitch. With 27 caps to his name, Tongan captain NILI LATU is his country’s most experienced player, and only one of two players with more than 20 caps. Aged 37, SIRELI BOBO is the oldest player on the pitch, making just his 13th appearance for Fiji. Tonga replacement SIALE FAHIUA is the youngest player involved on Sunday at 21 years of age.
