Finish Your Quilt 201 Taught by Amy Spanne In this class, you will learn what to do with your finished quilt top after it’s completed! You will learn basic free motion quilting techniques, two binding techniques and more! Finish your quilt to look as pretty as your top. You will not be working on your actual finished quilt tops during this class. You will be working with small quilt sandwich samples to hone your skills before taking them to your finished pieces.

Supplies: 

Sewing Machine in good working order with new needle (I use a 90/14 needle, mostly) Part of freemotion quilting is getting a feel for your own machine, so I don’t recommend using the store machines.

Feet for your machine: 1) Free Motion foot (the embroidery circle foot), 2) a 1/4” foot for your machine, 3) if you have a “walking foot” for your machine, bring it. Because we have so much info to cover, it’s important for you to be familiar with putting on your foot and/or setting your machine up for free motion. (If you aren’t sure, bring the box with all your feet. Bring your manual!)

Basic sewing notions (scissors, needles, seam ripper, etc.)

Rulers to use with your rotary cutter, one at least 3” x 12” and one small square – 3 ½” or 6½ ”

Rotary cutter with new blade

Rotary cutting mat (we have a few available in our classroom)

Wonder Clips and/or straight pins

4 pre-made quilt sandwiches (fabric-batting-fabric) at least 12” square. I like to take placemat size scraps, make them into quilt sandwiches using scrap batting. Warm & Natural is my favorite batting, but you should use what you will use on your “real” project. Short of scraps? Take two 1-yard pieces and cut each in 4 fat quarters. They will be the perfect size to play with.

Quality quilting thread in complementary or coordinating colors. Mettler is good (please don’t use Coats & Clark for this)

Two complementary fabrics, about ½ to ¾ yard each to practice different bindings – again, scraps are good here.

Quilting gloves. You can get the gloves from the store, or I use yellow dishwashing gloves.

About a dozen safety pins or basting spray, whichever you prefer to hold the sandwich together.
