Machine and Accessories  BERNINA Sewing Machine  BERNINA Serger  Reverse Pattern foot #1/1C/ 1D  Edgestitch Foot #10/10C/10D  Ruffler #86 Basket  Market Basket - Look for a style with rectangular bottom for easy construction. Sample has a 32” diameter around the top of the basket.

Cut & Prepare Liner Sections

Measure the Basket  Measure the basket around the top outside edge using a tape measure. 

Measure the depth of the basket and the size of the basket

Cut the Side Pieces  Since the bottom of our basket is a rectangle, two side rectangles and two end rectangles are used for the side pieces of the liner. 

This basket measures 32” around the top outside edge, so two 10” x 7 ¼” rectangles are used for the side pieces and two 8”x 7 ¼” rectangles are used for the end pieces. With ½” seams allowed, these four rectangles will equal the 32” outside edge measurement of the basket used.



Cut a set of side pieces for the liner and a set of side pieces for lining. Set aside. ceg

Cut the Inside Bottom  The inside bottom of the basket measures 5 ½” x 6 ¾”, so that the side pieces will have to be gathered or pleated to fit around the bottom rectangle.



Turn the stitched casing piece, wrong sides together along the seamed edge. Press. Stitch ½” from the seamed edge to make a casing for the ribbon ties.





Repeat for the other set of casing fabrics.

Cut the inside bottom piece based on the finished size + ½” seams added along all four sides. Cut one bottom of liner fabric and one bottom of lining fabric. Set aside.

Ruffles  For the ruffles around the outside edge, cut two pieces of coordinating fabric, 3” x 45 (fabric width). 

With a serger set for a three thread rolled hem and contrasting thread, stitch a rolled hem along one long edge of each piece.



Ruffle the other long edge of each piece using the Ruffler Attachment #86 with the adjustment lever set at 6 and a stitch length of 2.5mm. This will make one pleat at every 6 stitches.

Attach Ruffles to Casings  Pin one ruffled piece (wrong side) to the top raw edge of one casing piece (right side; contrast print). 

Start by lining up one short edge of a ruffled piece tucking the short end of the ruffle into the casing that has been turned in and pressed. Continue to pin along the long casing edge; tuck the other short end of the ruffle into the edge of the casing, cutting ruffle to fit. Machine baste along the long edge.



To finish the short ends of the ruffle, carefully fold the ruffle back and stitch the ends into the casing.



Baste all top raw edges together to make sewing to the basket liner easier.



Repeat for the other set of casing and ruffle pieces. Put these pieces aside until needed.

Add Pockets 

Make pockets for the ends and the side of the inside of the basket liner to hold flatware and napkins. Determine the finished size of your pockets adding ½” seam allowances.



For each pocket, cut one piece of pocket fabric and one lining piece of contrasting fabric. Cut the lining piece ½” longer than the pocket piece.



With right sides together, stitch the pocket piece and the lining piece across the top edge using a ½” seam.

Casings  For the casings, cut two pieces each from both the liner fabric (yellow print) and a contrast fabric (black print). Length: ½ the circumference of the basket top + 2”. Width: 4”, accommodates ¼” ribbon. Pieces for this basket are cut 17” x 4” each. 

With right sides together, place one piece of the casing liner print to one piece of the ruffle print. Stitch along one long edge with a ½” seam allowance. Press seam towards one side. On the short sides, turn in ½” twice and press.



Press lining piece up and over the top edge of the pocket and then turn to the other side leaving a 1/2” trim at the top edge of each pocket. Use Edgestitch Foot #10 to stitch in the ditch and finish the top edge of each pocket.

Put It All Together Stitch Liner Pieces Together  Stitch the side rectangles of the liner to the end pieces. 

With right sides together, gather or pleat the bottom edges of the liner and sew to the liner bottom rectangular piece. The corners of the rectangle will make it easier to align the side pieces with the bottom.

Stitch Lining Pieces Together  With right sides together, sew the lining sides to the lining bottom, again using the corners to help with alignment and gathering it to fit the bottom rectangle.  

For a gathered pocket, a piece of narrow elastic can be inserted into the edge trim using a bodkin.



Trim the lower edges of the pocket and lining even and serge the side edges to finish them using a three thread overlock stitch.

Stitch the side rectangles of the lining to the end pieces. Leave a 2” opening in one of the side seams so that the basket liner can be turned to the right side when finished.

Attach the Ruffle & Casing to Liner  Find the center of each of the side pieces of the liner and mark it. Leave 1/2” ON EACH SIDE OF THE CENTER MARK, and begin to pin the casing with ruffle attached to the liner. The ruffle with be facing the liner and the casing lining will be on top. 

Baste these pieces together using a ½” seam. The one inch space left at the side center will be where the handle of the basket is. This will be finished when the lining is attached.

Attach the Lining to Liner  Attach the lining to the basket liner with right side of lining facing the right side of the liner. Stitch with a ½” seam and turn to the right side through the opening left in the lining side seam. 

Turn in ½” on each side edge of pockets and stitch pockets into place before joining the side seams of the liner. A dividing line can be stitched into the center of a pocket if desired.



Repeat for each pocket.



When turned to the right side, the ruffle should be over the casing and the casing should extend ½” below the ruffle. Using a bodkin, insert narrow ribbon into the casing and tie to fasten the liner tightly around the basket.


