Measure the Basket Measure the basket as shown below to determine
Measurement A—the interior of the base
Measurement C—the upper edge from side to side Measurement B— the height of the basket

Create the Pattern Pieces Measure the basket as described on the previous page to determine the shape of the pattern pieces. Base (Measurement A): Measure the base inside the basket and add ½” to all edges. Tip: Cut a paper base that fits inside the basket, covering the entire base. Pin to fabric and cut ½” away from the edge of the paper.
Pockets: Using the rectangle measurements above, cut two rectangles of selected fabrics and two of coordinating fabric for trim/lining. Note: The pockets will be cut to size during the construction process. Two Pocket Pieces
One Base
Side Rectangles: Length (Measurement B): Measure the height of the basket, from the base to the top. Add 2”-3” for the outside overlap.
Two Lining/ Trim Pieces
Width (Measurement C): Measure the top edge of the basket from end to end (starting and stopping at the center of the handles). Add 1” for side seam allowances.
2” - 3” overlap

Flat Pocket Trim/Lining Place the fabric and lining right sides together and stitch using a ½” seam allowance. ♦ Press seam allowance to the lining side. ♦ Turn to the right side, wrapping the lining around the seam allowance to form a trimmed edge. Note: Lower edges of the fabrics will not match. ♦ Using Edgestitch Foot #10/10C, stitch-in-theditch to secure the fabrics together. ♦
Determine the finished size of the pocket. It should be approximately ⅔ of the width and length of the side rectangles. ♦ Trim the lower edge of the pocket, cutting off the mismatched edge. ♦ Trim the side edges, allowing ½” on each side for hemming. ♦ Fold under ½” on each side and press. ♦ Position the pocket on one side of the basket liner, centering it from side to side and matching the lower raw edges; pin in place. ♦ Stitch the pocket in place along each folded side; stitch vertical pocket divisions as desired.
Gathered Pocket Trim/Lining Place the fabric and lining right sides together and stitch using a ½” seam allowance. ♦ Press seam allowance to the lining side. ♦ Turn to the right side, wrapping the lining around the seam allowance to form a trimmed edge. Note: Lower edges of fabrics will not match. ♦ Using Edgestitch Foot #10/10C, stitch-in-theditch to secure the fabrics together. ♦ To form the elastic casing, position Open Embroidery Foot #20 next to the trim and move the needle position to the far left. Sew a line of stitches from side to side of the pocket. ♦

Trim the lower edge of the pocket to be the same height as the flat pocket. Do not trim the sides of this pocket. ♦ Using a bodkin, insert the elastic into the casing and pull it to gather the pocket to be the same size as the flat pocket. Gather or pleat the lower edge as needed to match the upper edge of the pocket. ♦ Fold under ½” on each side and press. ♦ Position and stitch the pocket on the remaining side of the basket liner, centering it from side to side and matching the lower raw edges. ♦ Stitch pocket in place along each folded side. ♦

Stitch the Base Place the two side rectangles (now with pockets) right sides together. Stitch the side seams using a ½” seam allowance, forming a tube with the pockets on the inside. Press the seams open and serge the seam allowances with a balanced 3-thread stitch. ♦ Serge the oval base to the “fabric tube” using a 4-thread balanced serger stitch. You may need to ease, gather, or pleat the lower edge of the tube to fit the edge of the oval base. It depends on the difference in the measurements of the interior base and the upper opening of the basket. Straight sided baskets will fit the base better than flared baskets. ♦
Press the seam allowance toward the liner; topstitch in place if desired.
Casing from the right side
Casing from the wrong side
Shape the Sides Cut a “U-shaped” opening at each end wide enough to allow the handles to be exposed. ♦ Serge the “U” using a narrow 3-thread stitch, then turn the serged edge to the inside and straight stitch the turned edge to finish the opening. ♦

♦
Repeat with the second casing strip and the remaining side of the liner.
Finish the Liner Cut the narrow ribbon into two pieces, making each piece at least 15” - 20” longer than the finished casing. Using a bodkin, feed one ribbon into each casing. Knot the ribbon ends if desired. ♦ Put the liner into the basket and smooth it into place, folding the upper edge down over the outside of the basket. ♦ Tie the two ribbons at each end and adjust the liner as needed. ♦

Attach the Casing Trim the casing strips to be 1” longer than the upper edge of one side rectangle. ♦ Fold each short end of the casing strip ½” to the wrong side; press. ♦ Fold each casing strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. ♦ Place one folded strip along the upper edge of one side of the side rectangles, matching the raw edges; pin. ♦ Serge the folded strip to the rectangle using a 4-thread balanced stitch. ♦
