FOLLOW THE HERD For the week of Jan. 21-27 The men’s and women’s basketball teams continue their stretch of home games with crucial matchups against California Baptist on Saturday. The men’s volleyball team will also see their home opener this Saturday against Hope International. The track and field team returns to Albuquerque for the second straight weekend, while the wrestlers head to California. Fans can follow all of the action at GCULopes.com. Men’s Basketball The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team returns home this Saturday, where they will face California Baptist. The ‘Lopes are currently 2-0 on this four-game homestand and are 12-0 this season at GCU Arena and 27-1 overall. The Antelopes defeated Cal Baptist, 77-74 in overtime, on Jan. 2 in Riverside, Calif. GCU is now 7-2 (16-4 overall) in the PacWest Conference, a half-game behind Dixie State for the first. Joshua Lowery, who made the game-winning shot against Azusa Pacific on Monday, leads the team with a 12.9 points-per-game average. Women’s Basketball The 17th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team continues their stretch of home games when they host California Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m. The Antelopes will look to avenge their lone Pacific West Conference loss, a 55-53 defeat at the hands of the Lancers in Riverside, Calif., on Jan. 2. GCU owns a 16-4 overall record and 8-1 record in Pacific West Conference play. GCU is currently in first place in the conference and leads conference teams in scoring defense (55.7), scoring margin (15.8) and rebounding defense (33.4). The ‘Lopes have not lost on their home court this season, posting a 10-0 mark at GCU Arena. Judy Jones is tied for second in the nation with 12 double-doubles on the season. Track and Field The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s track and field teams maintained their first and fourth USTFCCCA preseason rankings, respectively, following the first two weekends of action. The ‘Lopes will return to Albuquerque, NM for the New Mexico Invitational on Friday and Saturday, hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center. GCU’s Dario Horvat was named the USTFCCCA Division II National Athlete of the Week for his performance last weekend in Albuquerque, when he posted the fastest D-II time in the men’s 60-meter dash (6.69 seconds), collecting the first NCAA automatic mark for the ‘Lopes.
Wrestling Ranked No. 12 by the NWCA, Grand Canyon takes a three-match dual winning streak into competition this weekend in California. GCU, 9-4 in duals, takes on NAIA No. 15 Menlo Friday in Atherton, Calif., and wrestle Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe San Francisco State and Simpson Sunday in San Francisco. The Antelopes are 3-0 in RMAC Duals. GCU 133-pounder Lino Estrada went 3-0 in the dual wins last week and beat NAIA’s top 133-class wrestler Prescott Gardner in the team’s 23-14 win over No. 2 Southern Oregon. GCU has three wrestlers ranked in NCAA Division II, led by 125-class defending national champion Kyle McCrite (No. 2). Bobby Ward, at 149, and Tyrell Fortune, at 285, are both ranked third.
Men’s Volleyball After opening the season with its first five matches on the road, Grand Canyon’s men’s volleyball team welcomes NAIA’s Hope International for matches Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) at Antelope Gymnasium. GCU is 2-3 with all three losses coming to teams that were in the AVCA Top 15 (Stanford, George Mason, CSU Northridge) when they took on the Antelopes. Grand Canyon is 2-0 in home openers under the tutelage of head coach Jeremy Price, opening 2012 with a victory over NJIT and christening 2011 with a triumph over UC Santa Cruz. GCU defeated Hope International 3-0 in Fullerton, Calif. last year.
