FOLLOW THE HERD For the week of Oct. 15-21 The Antelopes continued their strong play, as the women’s volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer teams combined to go 6-0 last week. The volleyball team will host two games this week against Arizona Christian and Point Loma, while the soccer squads will travel to Dixie State for a game on Tuesday and return home to host the Red Storm on Saturday. The women’s golf team is in Santa Rosa, Calif., for the Sonoma State University Invitational, while the swimming teams are also in action at the Redlands Invitational this weekend. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country The men’s and women’s cross country teams will be off this week and will next be in action on Oct. 27 at the PacWest Conference Championships in Oahu, Hawai’i. Last season, the Antelope women finished third and the men fourth, at the PacWest Conference Championships. Last weekend, the women finished first and the men fourth at the Thunderbird Classic in Mesa, Ariz. The women were led by Kelsi Beam, who placed fifth overall with a 19:15.0. Teammates Pauline Muiruri and Kelsi Klotter finished with the same time as Beam and were sixth and seventh, respectively. Sharles Simon once again paced the Antelopes’ men’s squad, posting a 26:28.0 to finish in sixth. Renato Romo was the next highest placed ‘Lope with his 20th-place run (27:38.2). Brandon Kocmoud was 21st with a 27:41.8.
Men’s Golf The men’s golf squad will be off this weekend and will wrap up fall competition on Oct. 22-23 at the CSUMB Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif. They will be playing at the Bayonet Golf Course. The men finished in a fifth-place tie, with Geddes claiming second at the Interwest Insurance-Wildcat Invitational in Corning, Calif. last week. Geddes recorded a 6-under 210 for the tournament. Geddes had 13 birdies and one eagle during the tournament.
Women’s Golf The women return to action today and tomorrow at the Sonoma State University Invitational in Santa Rosa, Calif. They will be playing on the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club. The women placed finished fourth at the Western Washington invitational in Bellingham, Wash. last week. GCU’s Kelcey Tate was the highest placed Antelope, finishing in fourth with a 5-over 151.
Men’s Soccer The 15th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team improved to 11-2-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the Pacific West Conference after adding two more wins last week. The Antelopes defeated Hawai’i Pacific, 1-0, on Tuesday and downed Dominican (CA), 2-0, on Saturday. The ‘Lopes are a perfect 8-0 at home and have won seven consecutive games. Saeed Robinson collected two of those goals last week and leads the team with nine scores this season. Goalkeeper Joshua Zehring is tied for the PacWest lead with three shutouts. The ‘Lopes will now travel to St. George, Utah for a contest at Dixie State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. (Arizona time) before returning home to host the Red Storm on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field. Saturday’s match, along with women’s soccer and women’s volleyball games played on campus, will support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Donations can be made at the gate at each event.
Women’s Soccer The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team scored impressive wins last week, defeating Hawai’i Pacific, 6-1, on Tuesday and Dominican (CA), 2-0, on Saturday. The six goals against the Sea Warriors were a season-high for the Antelopes, who have now won four straight contests. Cat Lena was tabbed as the Pacific West Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for games contested Oct. 8-14 after posting a .909 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average. The Antelopes own a 7-4-2 overall record and 6-1-2 mark in PacWest play. GCU will travel to St. George, Utah for a quick, one-game road trip at Dixie State. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff (Arizona time). The ‘Lopes will then host the Red Storm on Saturday at the GCU Soccer Field at 8 p.m. Saturday’s match, along with men’s soccer and women’s volleyball games played on campus, will support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Men’s and Women’s Swimming It was another impressive start for the men’s and women’s swimming teams this past weekend in La Mirada, Calif. at the PCSC Pentathlon and Relay Meet. Ivan Nechunaev was the overall winner in the men’s Sprint Pentathlon. He took first and set a new school record in the 100 I.M. (51.12). Teammate and two-time NCAA National Champion, Eetu Karvonen, picked up victories in the 50 fly (22.86) and the 50 breast (25.63). He also took second in the 100 I.M. (52.03). Mychala Lynch led the women with the overall victory in the Sprint Pentathlon. Lynch picked up a pair of wins on the women’s side, winning the 50 fly (26.02) and the 100 I.M. (59.37). Her 100 I.M. mark also set a new school record. During the relay portion of the meet, the men claimed the top spot, while the women finished in a tie for first with D-I Loyola Marymount. The men claimed first in seven of the 10 contested relays, while the women won five. Both squads will be back in action next weekend at the Redlands Invitational in Redlands, Calif. In addition, the Antelopes announced a scheduling change that will now see Soka University visiting the Dottie Boreyko/Brophy Sports Campus in Phoenix on Nov. 10. The meet was initially scheduled for Aliso Viejo, Calif.
Women’s Volleyball Already 2-0 on its five-match homestand, the 16th-ranked Grand Canyon volleyball team continues its run of contests at Antelope Gymnasium with a non-conference matchup Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Arizona Christian and a Pacific West Conference battle with Point Loma at 3 p.m. Saturday. GCU is 17-3 overall and 6-3 in the PacWest, winning its last three matches. Saturday’s match, along with men’s and women’s soccer games played on campus, will support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Donations can be made at the gate at each event. The volleyball homestand wraps up Monday Oct. 22 against Dixie State.
