LEAD LINES Anticipation is a funny thing. In many ways, it’s fun. We enjoy it. When we have something to look forward to, we relish the anticipation. About two weeks from when I write this, and just a few days after you read it, Marvel Studio’s new movie, The Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will hit theaters. I’m really anticipating that movie. The first one was a real surprise hit, but it made almost $775 million worldwide during its theatrical run! The upcoming sequel will likely do even better. But my anticipation doesn’t end there, because there are also THREE MORE superhero movies coming out this year (Wonder Woman, Spiderman: Homecoming, and Thor 3: Ragnarok). It’s a great time to be a geek! The month of May is generally a time of great anticipation too. In high schools and colleges across the country, many seniors are anticipating their graduation. I can tell that May is approaching in my HOSTS kids at Chapelwood Elementary School. They are clearly looking forward to the end of school and a summer vacation. For racing fans, May is a time of anticipation as they look forward to the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500. I have tickets for this one, and I’m really excited about it! But anticipation has an aspect that we don’t like to think about. Sometimes, there’s a concern or fear that the thing or event we’re looking forward to will not live up to our expectations and hopes. “What if the movie is dud?” “What if I can’t get a job when I graduate?” “What if it rains all summer?” “What if my favorite racer crashes?” In order to mitigate this fear, some people try to keep their hopes at bay, and just not expect much to work out the way they want. I’m trying to learn a different way. Rather than mitigate the fear that my anticipation will turn out to be hollow, I’m learning to turn over those things to the Lord. I’m learning to trust Him to take care of them as I do the work to which he has called me. I’m trying to live out the prayer that Paul prayed for the church in Rome which we read in Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” I’m not there yet, but I’m finding that as I turn my anticipation over to the Lord and trust him to take care of the important stuff, I have less fear of the future. I’m able to be optimistic about my days to come because I have entrusted them to Him. I hope that’s true for you too! I hope that through the busy months of May and June, you’ll plan to be with us each Sunday as we study the life of Abraham in our next sermon series: Man of Faith. Abraham was a person who had learned to turn over his future to God. I’m trying to learn the same lesson. Leading as I follow, Casey

A BOX OF SOCKS? Once there was an odd shoebox donated to Operation Christmas Child. It was full of socks. No toys, no school supplies. The people in charge decided to leave it alone, praying that God would use this oddly-filled box for a specific child. Many weeks later, a child was delighted when he opened his shoebox filled with socks. Why? He had accidentally burned his feet in the family's cooking fire and had no shoes and socks. Therefore, he couldn't walk the mile distance to school. By putting several pairs of socks on his tender feet, he could now go to school! Coincidence? NO! God at work through a shoebox! During the month of May, we focus on collecting socks and underwear, for both boys and girls, for ages 2 - 14 years of age. Please put all donated items into the OCC bin. Thank you! Contact [email protected] for more information. 2
