LEAD LINES When I was a kid – probably older grade school age – my mom introduced me to the King Arthur legends. I fell instantly and irrevocably in love with high fantasy and everything related to it. I devoured Robin Hood and The Chronicles of Narnia. Then, a teacher introduced me to The Lord of the Rings (a debt I will never be able to repay), and I fell even deeper in love with that stuff! Nearly 30 years later, I’m still reading it! There’s just something about brave men and women taking up arms and armor to defend all that they love against the assembled forces of evil that never fails to stir my soul. Along with that somewhat geeky fascination came an interest in the sport of fencing, which led down a seemingly never-ending rabbit hole of Medieval weapons and armor. It started with just my fencing gear, then progressed to decorative swords, then learning how to accurately replicate historical fencing styles, and on to spending HOURS of my life watching the special features about the weapons and armor in the Lord of the Rings on the Extended Edition DVD’s over and over again. Good times. I tell you all that so that you will know how excited I am for our next sermon series, “Armored.” In the month of July, we will be talking about how to defend your faith with love and precision. In the long history of the world, no one has ever put on armor in earnest who did not love something enough to want to defend it. It might have been their liege lord, their land, their country, or even (most of all) their family. People who put on armor do so because they love something (let’s be honest – sometimes what they love is their own life – they don’t want to die!). From a literal “knight in shining armor,” to brave American soldiers in camouflage and Kevlar defending our freedoms, I believe they are motivated more by love than duty. Real armor is hot, hard, and uncomfortable; and defending our faith can be the same way. But because the Lord is worthy of it, we should defend our faith well, with accuracy and precision. You will not want to miss one week in this series. First, we’re going to be talking about how to defend your belief in the Trinity. The next week, we’re going to talk about defending the reliability of the Bible. The third week, Dr. Jay Wile is going to be here to help us defend our belief in Creation. After that, the next two weeks I’ll be talking about defending the Miracles in the Bible, as well as Prophecy. So, make plans to be here each week . . . and armor up! Leading as I follow, Casey

CHIP IN FOR CHAPELWOOD Our partnership with Chapelwood Elementary School continues as our annual school supply drive – Chip in Chapelwood - was kicked off June 25. On that date we began distributing yellow Chip in for Chapelwood shopping bags following each service. Attached to the bags was a shopping list for items the students will need to begin the school year. One question that pops up is, “Am I supposed to buy everything on the list?” The answer is absolutely not, as the list is quite extensive. But we ask you purchase what your budget allows. You can return purchased items to Chapel Rock each Sunday through July 16, or throughout the week during regular business hours. Place your donations in the designated bin in the DropZone.
An occ donation: dream into reality A young boy in Africa was delighted to the point of tears when he discovered new pencils in his Operation Christmas Child shoebox. The new pencils allowed him to return to school where teachers required students to bring their own supplies due to lack of funds. Returning to school was a dream come true! In the month of July, please purchase any school supply that can fit in a shoebox – help more children continue learning! Ideas include pencils and sharpeners, notebook paper, pens, erasers, calculators, scissors, glue sticks (no liquid glue), crayons, markers, stickers, coloring books, rulers, etc. We’re challenging each of you reading this article to put “OCC School Supplies” on your shopping list today! Remember, the Good News of Jesus will also be placed in each shoebox, and that’s the best gift of all. All items are collected in our DropZone bin located in the Foyer. If you have questions concerning Operation Christmas Child you should contact our OCC coordinator Judy Heuss.

BIRTH OF THE CHURCH — A STUDY OF ACTS Ever wondered what it was like in the early church in Jerusalem? Have you wondered what they did and how they came to do it? Have you asked the question about what Jesus told them and how that played into the first church events? Well, you can look into those questions and more this summer if you find your way to the Parlor on Sunday mornings at 8:15 AM or 9:30 AM. Fred Rodkey, Senior Associate Pastor, is teaching a series on the book of Acts, emphasizing the first few chapters about the birthing of the first church. In this series, you will study the founding of the church, the Holy Spirit’s entrance into the lives of the Apostles and then the followers of Jesus, the evangelistic outreach of the church under persecution, and you will take a glance at the redemptive scheme of salvation as the early church heard about it from the Apostles and others. There will be a special study in the month of July on the Holy Spirit and His ministry with us and to us. You won’t want to miss that teaching either. So, if you are looking for a summer study that answers some of your questions and more, this class is for you.
