Food Collection & Recycling At Farmers Markets Farmers Markets can play a special role in advancing the recovery of food scraps and agricultural plastics. There are more than 225 farmers markets in North Carolina from Robbinsville to Kitty Hawk. Public recycling programs can partner with farmers markets to expand access to recycling options and promote the growth and recovery of difficult-to-recycle items such as nursery plant pots, food scraps and single-serve beverage containers purchased from vendors away from home.

Leading by Example Farmers Markets are the perfect location for local governments and recycling companies to partner in the collection of agricultural plastics, food scraps and other recyclable materials. Here are two examples of successful farmers market collection programs targeting food scraps:

NC: Orange County, Carrboro Farmers Market Food Collection The Carrboro Farmers Market in Orange County, N.C. formed a partnership with Orange County Solid Waste Management to offer a free food waste drop-off for local residents and Farmers Market attendees. Using a volunteer force, the county helps to educate the public about compost and monitor the collection carts. The food waste is collected after the event by Brooks Contractor, a commercial composing company in Goldston, N.C., and taken to their facility for processing. The program began June 18, 2016, as a pilot project with a food waste awareness party at which there were composting demonstrations, worm bin explorations and a food waste collection bucket giveaway to people who pledged to participate in the program. VA: Charlottesville, City Market Composting Program The city of Charlottesville, Va., developed a composting station at their City Market as a pilot project funded by an EPA grant and city funding. The project was established to provide guidance and education for residents, capture food scraps from market activity and gauge community interest for future composting initiatives. The market established a main collection booth and three satellite stations with bins for compost, recycling and garbage. The stations were staffed by the project leader and volunteers as well as paid staff contracted through GreenBlue, an environmental nonprofit. Data was collected for weight, type, type of container used and repeat participation for compostable materials. Participants overwhelmingly wanted the project to continue. During 50 days, the project captured more than 6,000 pounds of compostable materials, primarily kitchen scraps and food scraps brought in from consumers. Once collected, the food scraps were hauled away by Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE) and taken to Black Bear Composting for processing. Recycling Flower Pots and Plant Flats at Farmers Markets Farmers markets offer an ideal location for the collection of plastic pots and flats, also known as Agricultural Plastics. Agricultural Plastics recycling sites have already been set up at the Raleigh Farmers Market and the Robert G. Shaw Piedmont Triad Farmers Market. NC DEACS can assist local government recycling programs by taking them through the steps of setting up local collections for Ag Plastics so those programs can take advantage of a growing market for these materials. A full list of Ag Plastics Recyclers can be found online at www.ncagplastics.org. The website includes an interactive map of Ag plastics recyclers, along with details about how you can contact them.
