Head Coach - Jeff Neubauer First Season at Fordham: 0-1 11th Season Overall: 188-135

Jeff Neubauer, head coach at Eastern Kentucky University for the past ten years, was named head men’s basketball coach at Fordham University on March 30, 2015. Over the past ten years, Neubauer led Eastern Kentucky to five 20-win seasons, including each of the past three years, and five trips to national postseason tournaments, including a berth in the 2014 NCAA Championships where the Colonels nearly upset second-seeded Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Neubauer’s 188 career wins at Eastern Kentucky is second only to Paul S. McBrayer’s 214 at the school, and his overall mark as the Colonels’ leader is 188-134. The past five seasons have been like none other at Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels’ 101 victories over that stretch are the most during any five-year period in school history. EKU won a school-record 25 games in 2012-13 and accumulated 70 victories over the past three seasons. Despite being picked to finish third in the Ohio Valley Conference East Division in 2014-2015, Neubauer guided the Colonels to a first place finish, earning the No. 2 seed in the OVC tournament. The Colonels finished the year 21-12, falling in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In 2013-2014, Neubauer led the Colonels to the Ohio Valley Conference title as Eastern won three games in three days at the tournament. The Colonels finished the season with a 24-10 mark and were second in the nation in turnover margin, fifth in three-point field goals per game and sixth in steals. Following the 2013-2014 season, Neubauer was named one of 15 finalists for the 2014 Hugh Durham Award, presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major coach. He was also selected as the 2013 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 19 Coach of the Year. Neubauer’s 2012-13 EKU squad finished 25-10, setting the school record for wins in a season, and earned a spot in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Eastern finished with three more wins than the previous program-best of 22, including the program’s first victory in a national postseason tournament game in 68 years. The Colonels have been just as successful in the classroom under Neubauer. In 2014, the program earned a coveted NCAA Division I Academic 4 - Fordham University Basketball Game Notes

Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award. This specific award is given each year to teams that posted multiyear APRs in the top-10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. Eastern Kentucky was one of only 40 men’s basketball teams from across the nation, and one of only two in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to earn the Public Recognition Award. Eastern Kentucky had a perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the 2012-13 academic year and the team’s multi-year APR score of 990 was among the top 10 highest scores for men’s basketball teams in the nation. EKU’s APR average (957) for men’s basketball teams was 33 points better than the national average. In just Neubauer’s second season at the helm, the Colonels earned a berth in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, winning the OVC title and finishing 21-12. Neubauer has coached eleven all-conference players, two OVC Defensive Players of the Year, an OVC Co-Freshman of the Year, two OVC Tournament MVPs and the program’s top two all-time leading scorers in his nine years at Eastern Kentucky. Before arriving at Eastern Kentucky, Neubauer served three seasons as the top assistant at West Virginia under head coach John Beilein, where he helped fuel the Mountaineers’ rapid rise to national prominence. The rebuilding process at West Virginia culminated in the Mountaineers’ dramatic run through the 2005 NCAA Tournament. WVU earned triumphs over five top-20 programs in the regular season before reaching the Big East Tournament’s championship game and the NCAA Championship Elite Eight. West Virginia finished 2004-05 ranked 12th in the country. Neubauer served under Beilein at the University of Richmond for five years before heading to West Virginia. The Spiders won 100 games during that time and earned a berth in the 1998 NCAA Championship. Prior to Richmond, Neubauer served three seasons as a graduate assistant coach at The Citadel, where he also earned an MBA degree. Neubauer, a native of Slidell, La., played point guard at La Salle University for head coach William “Speedy” Morris. The Explorers went 30-2 and earned an NCAA tournament berth in Neubauer’s freshman season. La Salle accumulated two more postseason berths and an overall record of 83-36 during his four years on the squad. Neubauer served as a team captain as a senior and earned honorable mention GTE All-Academic® accolades as a cum laude graduate in finance in 1993.

FORDHAM FIRST IN THREE-POINTERS Did you know???? Fordham was the first team in the NCAA to use the three-point shot? The first time a three-point shot was used experimentally in a game was on February 7, 1945 when Columbia defeated Fordham, 73-58. The three-point line was set at 21 feet from the basket and Columbia scored 11 “long goals” to Fordham’s nine. Also, free throwers had an option to take their shots from the regular 15-foot distance for one point or from 21 feet for two points. Eight “long fouls” were made during the game. The game also featured a 12-foot wide free throw lane, a move that would be adopted by the NCAA eleven years later. DOUG COLLINGS HONORED WITH JOHNNY BACH AWARD • Doug Collins, former U.S. Olympian and NBA head coach and current ESPN analyst, was presented the 2015 Johnny Bach Award at the Fordham University men’s basketball Tip-Off Dinner in Tognino Hall on November 4. • The Johnny Bach Award is presented annually at the Tip-Off Dinner to the individual who has had substantial and lasting impact on the sport of basketball and who best emulates Mr. Bach’s drive and passion for excellence. • John W. Bach, FCRH ‘48, a coaching icon on the collegiate, professional, and international levels, is one of the greatest basketball minds of all time. A defensive specialist, he has been credited with helping the Chicago Bulls win three straight NBA championships. He is still the all-time winningest coach in Fordham University basketball history, and led the Rams to five NIT appearances and a pair of NCAA berths in 18 seasons. • Collins is the fourth recipient of the award, joining Patrick Ewing (2012), P.J. Carlesimo (2013) and Phil Jackson (2014).

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING • Fordham University’s home court, the Rose Hill Gymnasium which was named as one of the four “Cathedrals of College Basketball” by ESPN The Magazine, is the oldest gym still being used by an NCAA Division I basketball team. The 3,200-seat gym opened on January 16, 1925 for a game between Fordham and Boston College. The Rams took the opener 46-16 in a game refereed by one of the University’s most prominent alumni, “The Fordham Flash”, Frankie Frisch. • The Gym was one of the largest on-campus facilities at the time it was built, earning the nickname “The Prairie” because of its large floor space. The original configuration had no end zone stands and a seating capacity of 2,100 but several standing room crowds of 6,000 were reported in the late 1920’s. Since its opening in 1925, the gym has seen numerous renovations, adding new seating, scoreboards and public address systems. • The arena has been in continuous use by Fordham’s basketball teams since its opening with the exception of the World War II years, when it was used for a barracks. • The Rose Hill Gym has been the site of many legendary college and high school basketball games including Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s final high school game and the 1988 Tolentine-Archbishop Molloy Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Championship game, billed by the New York Newsday as the “Best High School Game of the 80’s”. • The Rose Hill Gym has been named as one of the Top Ten arenas by USA Today and was featured in the 2011-12 ESPN The Magazine College Basketball issue as one of four Cathedrals of College Basketball. 6 - Fordham University Basketball Game Notes
