The Story of Scripture 6 Major Themes of the Bible

2 - The Fall: Sin Enters the World

1. Sin Enters the World • Serpent = Satan – So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:9

• Temptation was to be one’s own God – Romans 1:18-32

• Did God really say ________? – One of the greatest defenses against sin and temptation is knowing God’s Word – With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:10-11

1. Sin Enters the World • Both Adam and Eve sinned – Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. Romans 5:18-19

• Knew they were naked – Sin does not create, only uses what God created for good as evil

• Hid from God and wouldn’t confess sin – Adam not only blamed Eve, but He ultimately blamed God – Eve blamed her temptation

2. The Effects of Sin • Satan – The curse of the snake is primarily towards Satan – He wound Jesus, but Jesus will crush his head – The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Rev 20:10

• Eve – Increased pain in childbirth – Sin causes power struggle in marriage – So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:6-7

2. The Effects of Sin • Adam – Work increased tremendously – Work became toil – Thorns and thistles are introduced – Death will bring his body back to dust

• Creation –For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Romans 8:19-22

3. Redemption Promised • Gen 3:15 • Providing for their needs: tunics of skin • Blocking the tree of life – And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. Revelation 22:1-5
