Reteaching and Practice

Object of the game To capture more squares.

Directions 1. Player 1 rolls the dice and makes a fraction with the numbers rolled. The number on either die can be the denominator. The number on the other die becomes the numerator.

F Fraction Capture Gameboard

• A fraction equal to a whole number is NOT allowed. For 6 , example, if a player rolls 3 and 6, the fraction cannot be _ 3 6 _ because equals 2. 3

• If the two dice show the same number, the player rolls again. 2. Player 1 initials sections of one or more squares to show the fraction formed. This claims the sections for the player.

1 4

3 • A player rolls a 4 and a 3 and makes _ . 4 1 _ The player claims three sections by 4

initialing them.

• Equivalent fractions can be claimed. If a player rolls a 1 and a 2 and 1 1 , the player can initial one _ makes _ 2

3. Players take turns. If a player cannot claim enough sections to show the fraction he or she formed, no sections can be claimed. The player’s turn is over.

6. Play ends when all of the squares have been either captured or blocked. The player who has captured more squares wins.

F Differentiation Options READINESS Students may need practice in writing fractions. Using fraction cards may be helpful:

Players use the fraction side of the Everything Math Deck cards for halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths, and twelfths instead of dice to determine their fractions. If they draw a fraction card that cannot be covered on the board, they lose their turn.

ENRICHMENT

Players must claim all of the sections to end the game. Players need to adjust their strategies to use some of their moves to claim sections that will not win squares for them.

ELL SUPPORT Ensure that students understand the meanings of claim and capture. Students may think that claiming more sections overall, rather than capturing more squares, would lead to a victory. Use the board and sample dice rolls to explain. To claim a section means that just one part of the square belongs to you. To capture a square, you have to claim more than half of it.
