FROM BEHIND THE BENCH SMU’S 3 STARS

Nick Gorup Jr. • Forward Scored 2 goals in 4-4 tie vs. Gustavus

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2012 • AT ST. PETER, MINN. O n We b : R e c a p | B o x S c o r e | G a m e D a y P r e v i e w Another day, another game decided by one goal or less. And so it went for the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team Friday evening against Gustavus, as the Cardinals played their 14th game this season decided by a goal or less Thanks to some late-game heroics by Nick Gorup (Omaha, Neb.), Friday's game had a better ending for the Cardinals, as SMU rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits — and got a goal from Gorup with 15 seconds remaining in regulation — to lift SMU to a 4-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie with the Gusties at Don Roberts Ice Arena. “It's nice to get something for the effort,” said SMU coach Bill Moore. “It would have been nice to come away with a win, but we'll take the tie — especially after the way we started.” The Cardinals struggled out of the gate ¬— and the Gusties made them pay, scoring three times in the game's opening period to take a 3-1 advantage. Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) netted his team-leading eighth goal of the

season to account for SMU's first-period tally. Austin Balko (Midland, Mich.) got the Cardinals to within a goal, 3-2, with his seventh of the season late in the second period, but the Gusties regained their two-goal advantage on a goal by Gustav Bengston four minutes into the final period. From there, the Cardinals in general — and Gorup in particular — took over, as the Cardinal sophomore scored the first of his two goals at 13:15 to make it a 4-3 game, then added his second of the evening with 15 seconds remaining to pull the Cardinals even. Neither team could light the lamp in the fiveminute overtime, as the Cardinals put an end to its six-game losing streak with its second tie of the season and fourth overtime game in 21 contests. Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished with 31 saves for the Cardinals ¬— including 12 in both the first and second periods — while John McLean kicked out 27 SMU shots, 22 of which came after the first period.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2012 • AT WINONA, MINN. O n We b : R e c a p | B o x S c o r e | P h o t o G a l l e r y | G a m e D a y P r e v i e w Kevin Wentland Jr. • Forward Scored goal in both games vs. Gustavus

Austin Balko So. • Forward Leads team in assists (11), points (18)

With five minutes remaining in the third period, it appeared like the Saint Mary's University and Gustavus men's hockey teams were headed for their second overtime game in as many games. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, a not-so-funny thing happened on the way to OT — Gustavus netted a pair of power-play tallies and an empty net goal en route to a 4-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over SMU at the SMU Ice Arena. The Gusties got on the board first, as Alex Gallen beat SMU goalie Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) five minutes into the opening period. It took the Cardinals until the 4:55 mark of the second period to knot things up, as Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) scored his ninth of the season on the power play to make it 1-1.

The game would remain deadlocked — thanks in large part to the play of Horstman and his GAC counterpart Tyler Venne. With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, however, that all changed, as Wentland was whistled for a five-minute major penalty for head contact — and the Gusties took advantage, scoring back-to-back power-play goals two minutes apart to give Gustavus a 3-1 advantage. Ross Ring-Jarvi would add an empty net goal as the Gusties kept their MIAC playoff hopes alive with the victory. Horstman finished with 29 saves for the Cardinals, while Venne finished with 21 saves for Gustavus.
