Austin Balko So. • Forward 2 goals, 1 assist vs. Hamline
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2011 • AT VADNAIS HEIGHTS, MINN. O n We b : R e c a p | B o x S c o r e | G a m e D a y P r e v i e w Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill Moore knew that Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Hamline was going to be a battle from start to finish. And the Pipers didn't waste any time landing the first punch, scoring the game's first goal just 23 seconds into the opening period. The Cardinals countered — again, and again, and again, and again — but each time they landed a punch, the Pipers had an answer, and it was Hamline's 1-2 third-period combination that did SMU in, falling to HU 6-4 at the Vadnais Sports Center. “Hamline's a good team — they won the conference tournament a year ago, and are picked to be one of the top teams in the conference again this year,” Moore said. “I thought we did some good things — but we are still giving up way too many chances in our defensive zone. We've got to do a better job of getting into the shooting lanes and blocking more of those shots. “It was good to see us score four times, but we
can't be giving up six goals, either.” Still reeling from the Pipers' early jab, HU struck again, as Brian Arrigoni beat SMU goalie Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.) to put the Cardinals in a 2-0 hole. Nick Nagel (Andover, Minn.) cut the gap to 2-1 with his first of the season at 7:28 of the opening period. But the offense was just heating up, as HU's Joe Rubbelke and SMU's Chase Marshall (Maple Grove, Minn.) would also find the back of the net before the horn sounded, leaving SMU staring at a one-goal, 3-2 deficit after one period. SMU took a page out of the Pipers' playbook to open the second period, scoring eight seconds in on a power-play goal by Austin Balko (Midland, Mich.) to knot things at 3-3. Hamline regained the advantage less than two minutes later, then scored two goals in less than two minutes early in the third period to take a commanding 6-3 advantage. SMU's Bob Marx (Sioux City, Iowa) scored for the second straight game to get the Cardinals to within two, but it was too little, too late.

Saint Mary's University men's hockey coach Bill More and his Cardinals experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows Saturday evening in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rematch against Hamline at the SMU Ice Arena. The Cardinals were on top of the world after racing out to a 2-0 first-period lead against the defending conference champions. Unfortunately, it was the Pipers who would score four of the game's final five goals — including the gamewinner 43 seconds into overtime, as Hamline handed SMU a heartbreaking 4-3 setback. Unlike Friday's conference opener against the Pipers — in which the Cardinals found themselves trailing 1-0 less than 30 seconds into the first period — SMU took the upper hand early, scoring twice in the game's opening 20 minutes. Kevin Wentland (Columbia Heights, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board at 13:21, beating Hamline goalie Beau Christian glove side with a wrist shot. A.J. Mueller (New Berlin, Wis.) made it 2-0 a minute later, scoring his first goal of the season on the power play.
As dominant as the Cardinals were in the first period, the Pipers were equally as dominant in the second, scoring three times — sandwiching a Joe Rubbelke goal around a pair of power-play tallies — to give Hamline a 3-2 advantage heading into the third stanza. Austin Balko (Midland, Mich.) got the Cardinals even with his second goal of the season 1:41 into the final period and Andy Scheib (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Co. would keep it that way, as the junior goalie kicked out nine third-period shots in helping force overtime. In the extra session, however, it was the Pipers who would hit pay dirt, as Ryan McElhone banged a Nick Widing rebound past Scheib for the game-winner. Scheib finished with 34 saves for the Cardinals — including 15 in the second period — while Christian tallied 26 saves in goal for Hamline. SMU (0-2-0 MIAC, 0-6-0 overall) is now off until Nov. 22, when the Cardinals host Milwaukee School of Engineering in the first of two nonconference games at the SMU Ice Arena.
