Andover Central Middle School Jag-Wire Newsletter February 2015
From the Principals Desk It’s hard to believe that we are already mid-way through the third quarter of the school year here at ACMS! January and February are two of the busiest months in our school year as students return to new electives, an action packed extra curricular activity schedule and begin digging deeper into higher level content in each of their classes. January brought with it the second round of STAR reading and math screening for ACMS students, with individual growth being shown across the board for 6th-8th grade students. Project based opportunities ranged from 8th grade students trying and defending court cases in language arts classrooms to 6th grade science students creating genetic “Bloop in a Tube” creatures in science. ACMS crowned a Pioneer League Spelling Champion and had many other unique learning opportunities, like Skyping with world renowned author Avi and digital literacy presentation from Amber Norris of the Butler County District Attorneys office. ACMS also kicked off it’s new Robotics Curriculum in January with the implantation of the LEGO EV3 robotics systems that students have been building and programming throughout the last few weeks.
February also brings many activities for our students, including our first band concert of the semester on February 17th and the ACMS Jazz Band playing at Friends University’s Jazz Band Festival on February 20th. 8th Grade Students will make their first official visit to the high school on February 17th to begin the enrollment process. 6th and 7th grade students will begin the enrollment process for next year in the next month. Parent teacher conferences are also right around the corner on Monday February 23rd from 4:00-8:00. Like the fall, the conference format is a come and go setting where you can visit with the teachers in grade level pods or in the commons area. We also have our spring library book fair going on during this time as well. On February 27th, we will bring the week to a close with our Spring Dance. The dance will be held from 6:30-9:00 at ACMS for all 6th -8th Grade Students interested in attending. It will be a good way to help us kick off spring and connect with friends outside of school. State Assessments for Andover Central Middle School will start after spring break. This year’s for-
mat will have students testing more than ever before at the middle school level. Testing will last through the month of April and Tim Hayden, Principal into May. Like last year, it doesn’t look like we will receive student results on the assessment this school year, but there is the possibility of seeing results next fall. Our spring choir concert will be held March 2nd at the Andover Central High School Auditorium. Spring practices including boys and girls track and boys tennis will also begin on March 2nd. ACMS will also be hosting the Pioneer League Wrestling Tournament on March 7th. January and February are two of our busiest months here at ACMS. Students have been hard at work both in the classroom and community, and we’re certainly proud of all they have accomplished so far this semester. Things will slow down briefly in March before two more action packed months in April and May. We hope to see you at parent teacher conferences, and as always, thank you for your continued support of ACMS and all you do to make our school a great!
