From the Principals Desk It is hard to believe that the third quarter is already near its end and spring break is nearly upon us. The third quarter has been filled with outstanding accomplishments by both our students and staff. From exceptional art exhibits and spelling bee champions to athletic championships and teachers being recognized at the state level for their achievements, the third quarter has been one to remember. I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students

and staff for helping to make this such a great year. As we head into the 4th quarter, students will again be busy with numerous activities, state assessments, and unique opportunities to participate in grade level specific experiences that are once a year events. The fourth quarter should bring more opportunities for creating memories our students will never forget. As the we head into the final chapter of the 2014-2015

school year, I wanted to thank you parents, for sharing your most prized possession with us and for your con- Tim Hayden, tinued support of Principal ACMS. ACMS is a special place and you play a big role in our success. Thanks for all you do to make our school a great place for students and staff and have a great Spring Break!

Kansas State Assessments Bring New Changes Kansas State Assessments begin at Andover Central Middle School on March 31 and run through late April. Students will be assessed in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in reading and math, 7th grade science. And 6th and 8th grade social studies Specific dates for each assessment will be posted in the Jag Wire each week. This is another transitional year for Kansas assessments because we are phasing in new standards in language arts, math, science, and social studies and the state is also launching a new assessment format. All assessments will be computerized but the appearance and response options are different from what students have seen in the past. There will be a mix of questions from old standards and new ones with the new questions being used as a pilot to begin the process of norming the new assessment. This process will not be completed for several years. Schools are required to administer the test but the accountability and reporting process will be different each year until the new assessments are finalized. Because of this, individual student results will not be reported until after school starts next year. In the past state assessment scores have been used as one piece of information to use in placing students in various classes for the following year. We will not be using state assessment scores for that purpose until the new assessments are fully normed and the reporting process is established. We are encouraging students to look at this year’s assessment as a pilot program in which we are helping the state department of education learn what needs to be fixed or improved for next year. As always, we will encourage students to do their best work as that will give us and the state the best feedback on the new process and test items.

Skyping with Avi

6th grade students at Andover Central Middle School skyped with the author Avi in correlation with the reading of his novel The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Students prepared questions to ask Avi about his book, but also learned that reading is the most important skill to have to become a good writer.
