FY 2015 Proposed Budget Budget Work Session Follow-up April 8, 2014

The following information is provided in response to a question raised by Mary Hynes on March 6, 2014, asking what the Arlington County Fire Department needs to do to have a 1 Insurance Services Organization (ISO) rating. The Insurance Services Organization (ISO) classifies communities from 1 (the best) to 10 (the worst) based on how well they score on the ISO Fire Suppression Rating Schedule. They grade such features as water distribution, fire department equipment and manpower and fire alarm facilities. At present, the Arlington County Fire Department holds a Class 2 rating from the ISO. The ISO has just issued a revised Public Protection Classification Schedule which will become effective July 1st, 2014. Given that these standards are changing, at this time, it is difficult to ascertain the criteria to obtain the Class I ISO rating. The Arlington County Fire Department has yet to study these new standards, which are different from those used to rate the County in 2012. The department will follow up with the County Board at a later date with an analysis of the new rating schedule and a more comprehensive response to Class 1 rating requirements.
