FY 2015 Proposed Budget Budget Work Session Follow-up March 28, 2014 The following information is provided in response to a question raised by Mr. Tejada at the DPR work session on March 19, 2014, regarding the status of the Rectangular Field Fund, with a follow-on question by Ms. Hynes regarding the requirements to care for non-synthetic rectangular fields. Rectangular Field Fund At the close of FY 2013, the Field Fund had a total balance of $398,686. On March 15, the Board approved action in FY 2014 for DPR to move forward with spending $85,000 of that balance on diamond field enhancements, leaving a balance of $313,686, which comprises the funds paid by rectangular field sports. DPR estimates yearly revenue of $180,000 to accumulate in the Field Fund account, with $130,000 attributable to rectangular fields and $50,000 attributable to diamond fields. The rectangular field portion of the balance continues to accumulate until there is enough in the fund to support the installation of a new synthetic field to replace an existing non-synthetic (natural) turf rectangular field. It is projected that enough funds will have accumulated by FY 2017 to install the first synthetic rectangular field from this fund. Replacement of natural turf fields with synthetic fields allow for year round play and lower operational costs. Diamond field funds will continue to be spent on nonsynthetic diamond field enhancement projects in coordination with the Sports Commission. Care of Non-Synthetic Fields DPR maintains the non-synthetic turf of athletic fields (diamond or rectangular) through an annual nutrient management program. All warm-season turf fields (most are Bermuda and irrigated) receive a basic nutrient management program. This annual program includes weed control, pest control, and fertilization. Included in the turf management is “core” or “shatter tine” aeration which is preformed up to four times per year. This helps to minimize compaction from heavy use. All Bermuda fields are assessed in May for excessive turf damage. Staff compiles a list of fields where turf repairs are needed. At the end of the season, staff contracts to have the bad areas removed and replaces the sod. Bermuda fields are closed in the summer, which allows for any repairs or weak spots to recover before the season begins again in the fall. All cool season turf fields (most are non-irrigated) receive the same basic nutrient management program. However, since these do not have irrigation, “core” aeration is completed up to three times per year. Cool season turf fields are assessed in the early fall for excessive turf damage. Staff compiles a list of fields where turf repairs are

needed. At the end of the season, contractors remove the bad areas and replace the sod. Most cool season fields are over-seeded twice in the fall as well.
