This lesson requires the use of a number line to 100 and base ten blocks. Students are provided academic vocabulary, a number line, and a place value chart in their Student Journal.

Steps: equal to 25 = 25

1. Compare the numbers using base ten blocks or a number line. 2. Place the greater than, less than, or equal to symbol in the box.

Application of MPs: MP1:

What are my steps?

MP2: What symbol did you use today? MP5: What tool was used? Why?

/ *MP1: Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it! *MP8: Find a strategy to help solve the problem. Teacher: Provide a number line for use with this lesson. Directions: Use a number line or base ten blocks to compare numbers. Fill in the symbol to make the number sentence true.

1. Compare the numbers 46 and 64. Place the correct symbol in the box to make the number sentence true.

46 64 > < = 

State the objective: Today, I will use a number line or base ten blocks to compare two-digit numbers using the greater than, less than, or equal to symbols.

Use base ten blocks to compare the numbers. 

Explain that the 4 base ten blocks (40) is less than the 6 (60), therefore 46 is less than 64.

Emphasize that even though the numbers have the same two digits, they are not equal because they are in different place values.

Place the less than symbol in the box to make the number sentence true and emphasize that the small number is on the closed, pointy side of the symbol and the greater number is on the open, bigger part of the symbol.

Compare 46 and 64 using a number line. 

Use a number line to find 46 and 64 and compare the numbers.

Explain that 46 comes before 64 on the number line, therefore 46 is less than 64.

/ Directions: Use a number line or base ten blocks to compare numbers; then, fill in the symbol to make the number sentence true.

2. Compare the numbers 73 and 73. Place the correct symbol in the box to make the number sentence true.

73 73 > < = 

Restate the objective: Today, I will use a number line or base ten blocks to compare two digit numbers using the greater than, less than, or equal to symbols.

Use base ten blocks to compare the numbers. 

Explain that the 7 base ten blocks (70) is the same as the 7 (70) in the second number. Explain that the 3 ones is the same as the 3 ones in the second number.

Emphasize that, since the digits in both numbers are in the same place values, they are equal to each other.

Place the equal to symbol in the box.

Compare 73 and 73 using a number line. 

Use a number line to find 73 and 73 and compare the numbers.

Explain that, since they are in the same position on the number line, they are equal to each other.
