Today, I will compose a cone and cylinder by combining two or more different shapes using a net.

Vocabulary

Teacher Resources Considerations: Use the nets provided at the end of this lesson to provide manipulatives for students.

Cone : A solid object that is circular on the bottom and comes to a point at the top with one vertex.

Each student needs two nets of each solid figure. One for Structured Guided Practice and one for Final Check for Understanding. A/B partners can take turns during Structured Guided Practice to compose the nets. Then in Final Check for Understanding, the students can compose the opposite net. (This would only require one net per student for each solid figure.)

Application of MPs: MP1:

How do drawings help in today’s lesson?

MP4: How would it help to create a model?

Cylinder: A solid object that is circular on the top and the bottom and round on the side.

MP7: What do you notice about threedimensional shapes?

Net: A pattern that you can fold to make a solid figure.

/ Directions: Use nets to compose a cone and cylinder.

1. Compose a cone. 

State the objective: Today, I will compose a cone by combining two or more different shapes using a net.

Model how to construct a cone by folding and connecting the net.

Explain that a cone is a solid figure that is round on the side, has a circular flat bottom surface, and comes to a point at the top.

Link the cone to real life objects (ice cream cone, construction cone, party hat, etc.).

2. Compose a cylinder. 

Restate the objective: Today, I will compose a cylinder by combining two or more different shapes using a net.

Model how to construct a cylinder by folding and connecting the net.

Explain that a cylinder is a solid figure that is flat on the top and bottom and round on the side.

Link the cylinder to real life objects (soda can, soup can, marker, cake, etc.).

/ Directions: Use nets to compose a cone and cylinder.

1. Construct a cone. 

Restate the objective.

Direct students to construct a cone by using a net. (Consider having students take turns with a partner constructing each net. Students can construct the opposite net in Final Check for Understanding.)

2. Construct a cylinder. 

Restate the objective.
