Today, I will use the greater than or less than sign to compare three -digit numbers.

Vocabulary

Teacher Resources Considerations:

greater than

less than

215 > 212

212 < 215

Other words used to compare numbers: more most greatest least

For students struggling with the correct symbol, consider having them place two stacked dots next to the greater number and one dot next to the lesser number. When connecting the dots as an arrow, they will form the correct sign. Have students then read the inequality to help them connect the symbol to its meaning. It is important to explicitly apply an understanding of place value when comparing numbers.

Application of MPs:  MP2: What math symbols do you use?  MP6: How do you know your answer is reasonable?  MP7: What rules help you solve this problem?  MP8: What strategies can you use to help solve the problem?
