Today, I will read and represent numbers in expanded form.

Vocabulary

Teacher Resources

Whole number: any number including 0 (e.g., 0, 1, 2, 3, …); the number 113 is a whole number.

Considerations:

Base ten blocks (used to represent/draw whole numbers)

When writing a number in expanded form, the number is decomposed. This term will be referenced when using strategies to add and subtract.

hundreds

tens

ones

Emphasize that another way to write the whole number 113 is 100 + 10 + 3.

Application of MPs:  MP2: How do you know your answer is reasonable?

The expanded form of 113.

 MP7: Did you notice any patterns when expanding numbers?  MP8: What strategies did you use to help solve the problems?

Standard form: the way we usually write numbers Decompose: taking apart a number into hundreds, tens, and ones.

/ *MP1: Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it! *MP8: Find a strategy to help solve the problem. Directions: Read and solve.

1. 

Write the number 472 and model the hundreds, tens, and ones using base ten blocks.

Count the 100s.

= 400 or 4 hundreds

Count the 10s. = 70 or 7 tens

Count the 1s. =

2 or 2 ones

Explain that expanded form is a way to write numbers by adding the value of each of its digits (or by adding the value of the hundreds, tens, and ones). The number 472 in expanded form is:

400 + 70 + 2 = 472

2. 

Write the number 325 and model the hundreds, tens, and ones using base ten blocks.

Count the 100s.

= 300 or 3 hundreds

Count the 10s. = 20 or 2 tens

Count the 1s. =

5 or 5 ones

Write the number in expanded form, by adding the value of each of its digits (or by adding the value of the hundreds, tens, and ones). The number 325 in expanded form is:

300 + 20 + 5 = 325
