Today, I will apply and demonstrate my understanding of measurement to find items with a specific measurement.

Materials  One student recording sheet for each group.  One marker or crayon for each group.

Preparation 

The recording sheet is divided into 4 sections. Each section is numbered 1-4.

Example:

Check for Understanding 

Are students able to articulate meta-cognition?

Are students able to articulate what they would do differently to solve the problem? (Error Analysis)

How did they solve the problem?

Were students able to appropriately estimate the items that might be 2 centimeters, 2 inches, 2 feet, or 4 feet?

Did students use the appropriate tool for measurement and line up the object to be measured correctly?

Verbal Instruction *MP1: Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it! *MP8: Find a strategy to help solve the problem.

Instructions: Today your math group is going to go on a scavenger hunt within the classroom to find items. Estimate to find which items in the classroom measure these lengths. Pick the appropriate measurement tool (ruler, yardstick, or tape measure) and measure to check if they indeed are the correct length. Section 1: 

Estimate to find items in the classroom that are about 2 centimeters in length. Pick the appropriate measurement tool and measure the objects to check if they indeed are the correct length. Write down the exact lengths of your objects.

Section 2: 

Estimate to find items in the classroom that are about 2 inches in length. Pick the appropriate measurement tool and measure the objects to check if they indeed are the correct length. Write down the exact lengths of your objects.

Section 3: 

Estimate to find items in the classroom that are about 2 feet in length. Pick the appropriate measurement tool and measure the objects to check if they indeed are the correct length. Write down the exact lengths of your objects.

Section 4: 

Estimate to find items in the classroom that are about 4 feet in length. Pick the appropriate measurement tool and measure the objects to check if they indeed are the correct length. Write down the exact lengths of your objects.

Group Presentation *MP3: Do you agree/disagree with what

said?

*MP6: How do you know your answers are correct/reasonable?

Sample Probing Questions: 

Explain how your group found the objects to measure.

Was your estimate close to the actual length you were looking for?

What were the differences between estimating the size of the object and measuring the size of the object?

What would you do differently to solve the problem correctly in the future?

Reflective Closure 

Were students able to recognize the items that were approximately 2 centimeters, 2 inches, 2 feet, and 4 feet?

Were students able to verbalize the mathematical content and how they went about solving the problems?

Were students able to correctly record their data into the table?

What strategies did students use when estimating and measuring items?
