GALE & SNOWDEN ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS GENESIS PROJECT – GREAT TORRINGTON
GENESIS PROJECT TORRINGTON, DEVON An example of Gale & Snowden Architects working in an historic environment and working with community organisations and meeting the challenges of integrating new build into a historic setting and working with the community and funding bodies to deliver the project. Multi-storey Grade 2 Listed building conversion to community centre including museum, library, crèche, tourist information centre and offices. New community telecentre building. The partners in the scheme were Torridge District Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Landmark Trust, RDA (formerly RDC), English Partnerships and LEADER. Leader/RDA/English Partnership funding was successfully obtained. 1837 late Regency Period formerly a gentleman’s residency. We successfully meshed conservation repair and renovation works with contemporary requirements for energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable buildings. Period window and door details and window shutters and linings were copied. Period skirting details, plaster mouldings and covings, six panel regency doors and a leaded glazed lantern were replaced. An existing curved staircase and first floor balcony was reconditioned and strengthened. The buildings were rendered using traditional lime render and the soft brick work was similarly repaired using lime mortars. The final design was able to reinstate the original internal room layout of the house.
