GALE & SNOWDEN ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS LYNTON LEARNING CENTRE, LYNTON, DEVON
LYNTON LEARNING CENTRE Sympathetic conversion, renovation and refurbishment of former Victorian market hall and later fire station to incorporate a much-needed new library and computer education centre. As well as providing enhanced library facilities and computer training facilities, this project has secured the life of an otherwise redundant building for future generations and helps to improve an unloved part of Lynton. The design allowed original features to be renovated and exposed, and married with modern interventions. Stone walls were repaired using lime mortar, breathing building products specified and PVC products were avoided. Local contractors were used and encouraged to train local labour. The resultant building is cheerful, colourful, filled with natural light and attractive to the public. At areas where the public come into contact with the building emphasis was placed on using good quality, durable sustainably sourced natural materials. Client: Value: Completed:
