Ganesh III A ttem p t. A joint N epalese-Japanese expedition with twelve mem bers was led by Shoji Im ai. Originally they had permission for G anesh I via its north ridge but recent border adjustm ents have put this route into Tibet and it is not available to climbers from the N epalese side of the m ountain. The N epalese governm ent proposed the southwest face, but the expedition believed this impossible. They then requested perm ission for the north ridge of G anesh III (7132 meters, 23,400 feet). Base Cam p was placed at 11,975 feet on Septem ber 13. They reached a
high point of 18,375 feet. On O ctober 9 H iroshi Terui, K aoru K uroiw a and M asaru M izuno were overwhelmed by an avalanche while descend ing from Cam p I. The expedition was abandoned after a week of fru it less search for the three men. M ic h a e l
