Canary Islands wildfires: thousands flee as fires threaten forests More than 4,000 residents in La Gomera and Tenerife were evacuated as firefighters struggled to stop fires spreading. In 2012 Tenerife had the driest winter for 70 years. The temperatures in August 2012 were 40°C and it was very windy.
