WHAT IS THE MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM? The Master Gardener Program is a nationwide volunteer program that provides educational programs on horticulture topics. Throughout New York State, Master Gardeners are trained by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the science and art of gardening. Master Gardeners are neighbors who teach their neighbors about such topics as:          

Landscaping Houseplants & Herbs Composting & Soils Fruits &Vegetables Plant diseases Birds Beneficial & harmful insects Integrated pest management Nuisance wildlife management And much more!

Master Gardeners are an integral component of a county’s Extension program. The projects and functions carried out by Master Gardeners are based on the educational objectives of the local Extension initiatives.

In Genesee County Master Gardeners volunteer in the following ways:  Staff the Consumer Helpline  Work with community gardens  Conduct gardening workshops  Staff a booth at local Farmer’s Markets  Judge 4-H exhibits at the County Fair  Host the Garden Gala and Harvest Gala  Conduct Home Diagnostic Visits

Join the Genesee County Master Gardeners for their Spring Garden Gala! There will be a plant sale featuring indoor and outdoor plants, most grown by Master Gardeners. Also a geranium sale, Chance Auction and free soil pH testing.

Plant Sale begins promptly at 10 am on the front lawn of the Extension building, 420 East Main St. in Batavia. Chance basket auction drawing to be held at 12:30 pm.

FREE monthly garden series. We plan to hold a variety of topics on the 1st Tuesday of the month (except July) February through November. Bring your lunch and join us from 12:15pm to 12:45pm at 420 E. Main St. in Batavia. Registration is not required.

Catch the Gardening Bug Spring 2016 Series

Spring 2016 Series “Catch the Gardening Bug” Join the Master Gardeners for delicious desserts, coffee and tea. Held at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County, 420 East Main Street in Batavia from 6:00pm - 8:00pm Cost is $10 per class (unless noted otherwise) & pre-registration is required. Class size is limited.

Using Color in the Garden Wednesday, March 30 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We will discuss aspects of color theory and its application in the garden, all lavishly illustrated with photos. Blooms and beyond - berries, bark, variegated foliage, and garden ornaments all combine for a more powerful visual impact. And Yes! You can grow these flower combinations here since the presentation features local gardens. Instructor: Brenda Fox, Master Gardener. Pre-register by March 24.

Better Garden Photography Thursday, April 7 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Have you ever visited and photographed a gorgeous garden, but were later disappointed with your photos? In this presentation we will cover many subjects including the impact of light, and elements of composition such as balance, contrast, perspective, and color. Useful techniques are taught such as the rule of thirds, framing, and the effect of lines. All topics are illustrated with photos of garden scenes. Practical tips will improve your photos in (and out!) of the garden. Instructor: Brenda Fox, Master Gardener. Pre-register by April 1.

Urban Forestry & Tree Care

What’s Wrong with My Plant?

Wednesday, April 13 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Healthy trees are an asset as they provide cooling shade, habitat for birds and can increase the value of your property. Learn how managing trees in an urban environment differs from a traditional forest environment. We’ll discuss a number of problems common to trees in an urban setting. We will also cover ways to improve and prevent tree health issues. FREE Event. Instructor: Garrett Koplun, DEC Forester. Pre-register by April 8.

Wednesday, April 27 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Gardener's introduction to plant disease identification and treatment. Learn how to recognize the symptoms of the four major categories of plant diseases and their specific treatment strategies via a review of those most commonly brought into our Helpline. Instructor: Sue Eick, Master Gardener. Pre-register by April 22.

Invasive Plants & other Species in the Landscape Wednesday, April 20 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. What are invasive species? Where are they located? Are they growing in my garden? What can I do? Why should I care? Find out the answers and learn how gardeners can be part of the solution. We’ll also discuss some of the alternative plants you can grow instead of the ornamental invasive plants that may be lurking in your garden. Instructors: David Russell and Brandie Schultz, Master Gardeners. Pre-register by April 15.
