WHAT IS THE MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM? The Master Gardener Program is a nationwide volunteer program that provides educational programs on horticulture topics. Throughout New York State, Master Gardeners are trained by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the science and art of gardening. Master Gardeners are neighbors who teach their neighbors about such topics as:          

Landscaping Houseplants & Herbs Composting & Soils Fruits &Vegetables Plant diseases Birds Beneficial & harmful insects Integrated pest management Nuisance wildlife management And much more!

Master Gardeners are an integral component of a county’s Extension program. The projects and functions carried out by Master Gardeners are based on the educational objectives of the local Extension initiatives.

In Genesee County Master Gardeners volunteer in the following ways:  Staff the Consumer Helpline  Work with community gardens  Conduct gardening workshops  Staff a booth at local Farmer’s Markets  Judge 4-H exhibits at the County Fair  Host the Garden Gala and Harvest Gala  Conduct Home Diagnostic Visits

Join the Genesee County Master Gardeners for their Spring Garden Gala! There will be a plant sale featuring indoor and outdoor plants, most grown by Master Gardeners. Also a geranium sale, Chance Auction and free soil pH testing.

Plant Sale begins promptly at 10 am on the front lawn of the Extension building, 420 East Main St. in Batavia. Chance basket auction drawing to be held at 12:30 pm.

FREE monthly garden series. We plan to hold a variety of topics on the 1st Tuesday of the month (except July) February through November. Bring your lunch and join us from 12:15pm to 12:45pm at 420 E. Main St. in Batavia. Registration is not required. Catch the Gardening Bug Spring 2017 Series

Spring 2017 Series “Catch the Gardening Bug” Join the Master Gardeners for delicious desserts, coffee and tea. Held at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County, 420 East Main Street in Batavia from 6:00pm - 8:00pm Cost is $10 per class & pre-registration is required. Class size is limited.

Is Your Garden Ready for Spring?

Thursday, March 30 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Master Gardener Brenda Fox will highlight perennial plants with a solid track record of good performance here in our local climate. There are choices for a variety of situations - sun and shade, with blooms for spring, summer and fall. Particular cultivars may be especially fragrant or bloom for a long time, and should readily available for purchase. Register by March 24.

Thursday, April 20 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Do you know where your cut flowers come from or how many miles they have travelled? Master Gardener Brandie Schultz will take a look at the fascinating history of the cut flower industry. She will then talk about America’s Slow Flower Movement and how locally grown flowers are making a comeback. Register by April 14.

Thursday, May 4 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Get tips from Master Gardeners on how to get your garden ready for the growing season. What chores should you be doing now? We will cover a variety of topics from winter damage to dividing perennials to pruning hydrangeas. This class will take place outside in the CCE garden, so dress accordingly. Instructors: Master Gardeners Register by April 28.

Permaculture 101 Wednesday, April 12 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. You may be wondering what Permaculture is or how to use it in your garden. We’ll cover the basics of Permaculture and show you how to get started. Master Gardener Dan Esler will explain how you can combine the best of natural landscaping with edible gardening. The goal is to work with nature, not against it. Register by April 7.

Is Your Garden Ready for Spring?

Wednesday, April 26 - 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Gardener's Introduction to Integrated Pest Management (IPM). One of the key components of IPM is scouting – taking a close look at your plants to see if insects or diseases are there. We will talk about some of the IPM techniques that you can use in your garden. Weather permitting, we will go into the garden to show you how. Register by April 21.
