Senior forward Lucy Dernovsek averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in two road victories this past week. Dernovesk posted a game-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting at Saginaw Valley State, then followed up with her seventh doubledouble of the season of 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds vs. Northwood. She also tallied five assists two blocks and a steal at NU. Dernovsek leads the Huskies in scoring (12.2) and rebounding (8.2) this season.

Sophomore forward Phaebre Colbert averaged 18.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg as the Warriors closed out the 2010-11 regular season with two victories. Colbert tallied 16 points nine rebounds, and four steals against Lake Superior State on Thursday. She then recorded 20 points, six rebounds, four assissts and two steals vs. Hillsdale. Colbert hit double figures in 11 of Wayne State’s last 13 games, averaging 15.1 ppg, after not reaching double digits in the first 13 contests.

Ashland Eagles (17-9, 12-7 GLIAC)

Ferris State Bulldogs (13-13, 8-11 GLIAC)

Ashland went 2-0 last week and locked up the fifth seed in the GLIAC Tournament. AU will play at Findlay. The Eagles went 0-2 against UF this season. The first meeting, at Findlay, went to the Oilers in double overtime, 80-77 and at Kates Gymnasium the Oilers won in overtime, 81-73…freshman guard Alyssa Miller (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) had a career-high 13 assists in Saturday’s win over Lake Erie. That total is one shy of the school single-game record of 14, shared by Alethea Lamberson and Sara Whitis…sophomore forward Daiva Gerbec (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) has set the school, single-season record for rebounds. Gerbec has 287 rebounds – the previous record of 280 boards was held by Jackie Mason, who set the record in 2003-04. Gerbec is averaging 11.0 rpg. – the school single-season record is 10.2 rpg., also held by Mason. Gerbec has scored in double digits in 14 consecutive games, the last time she didn’t do that was Dec. 30 against Mars Hill…senior forward Liz Tyler (Monroeville, Ohio), in the final home game of her career, scored a career-high 24 points when the Eagles beat Lake Erie…as of last week, AU was the national leader in free throw percentage (.786). In two games last week, AU went 31-of-37 (.837) at the stripe…the Eagles have held seven teams to 53 points or less this season.

The Ferris State University women’s basketball team ended its 2010-11 campaign in style on Saturday (Feb. 26) as the Bulldogs upset nationally-ranked rival Grand Valley State 65-62 in their season finale at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena. With the victory, the Bulldogs wrapped up the year with a 1313 overall record and an 8-11 league mark. Ferris State also sent its three seniors off as winners as the Bulldogs celebrate the annual Senior Day event prior to the game by recognizing the trio of Tiara Adams (Lansing/ Waverly), Andrea Clancy (Port Austin/North Huron) and Becci Houdek (Canton). Ferris State’s win over GVSU was its third in as many tries against a ranked team at Wink Arena this season as the Bulldogs also previously defeated then-ranked Gannon and Michigan Tech at home this year. This year marks the 14th time in the last 15 years the Bulldogs have reached double-figure wins

Findlay Oilers (17-9, 12-7 GLIAC)

Grand Valley State Lakers (20-6, 13-6 GLIAC)

The Oilers split a pair of home games last week, winning 66-63 over Hillsdale on Thursday and losing 88-66 to Lake Superior State on Saturday. In the win over Hillsdale, the Oilers erased a 17-point deficit to give them homecourt advantage in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament. Sophomore forward Kayla Brown led the way with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. She also tallied five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior guard Clare Aubry netted 17 points, hitting 4-of-9 three pointers, while junior guard Laura Bardall contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. In the loss to Lake Superior State, Brown led Findlay with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting while Bardall and Aubry chipped in 18 and 15 points, respectively. The Lakers shot an incredible 68.5 percent (37-of-54) from the floor and drilled 13-of-19 (68.4%) shots from behind the three point line. During the week, Brown averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She also hit 77.3 percent (17-of-22) of her field goal attempts during the week.

#21 Grand Valley State fell to Ferris State by a 6562 score in the regular season finale on Saturday, but the Lakers still finished the year with a 20-6 overall record. It is the second time in four years that head coach Janel Burgess has notched a 20-win season. GVSU has won 20 games in a season 14 times in program history…junior guard Jasmine Padin (Wyoming, Mich.) finished the regular season first in the GLIAC in steals (2.3) and second in both assists (5.2) and assist/turnover ratio (2.1). She is also third all-time in Laker history with 174 career threepointers…sophomores Alex Stelfox (Bowie, Md.) and Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich.) finished the year ranked fifth and eighth in the GLIAC in scoring, respectively. Stelfox averaged 15.0 points per game, while her 54.3 field goal percentage was third-best in the league. Taylor notched 14.9 points per game, while ranking second in the league in offensive boards (3.1) and ninth in overall rebounds (7.0)…the Lakers host Northwood on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. in the GLIAC Quarterfinals. GVSU defeated the Timberwolves by a 68-54 score on Dec. 9 in Midland and lost to NU by a 63-48 count on Jan. 12 in Allendale.

Hillsdale Chargers (16-9, 10-9 GLIAC)

Lake Erie Storm (3-22, 2-17 GLIAC)

The Hillsdale College women’s basketball team will travel to Sault Ste. Marie for the second time this season in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament, at 7:00 Wednesday. The Chargers are the No. 7 seed in the tournament, and have qualified for the conference tournament for the seventh straight season. Wayne State’s win over the Chargers was its first since March 1, 2008. Hillsdale’s last two losses of the regular season came on the road by a combined four points. Freshman guard Marissa DeMott has scored in double figures in four straight games. Junior guard Chelsea Harrison has scored in double figures in 32 straight games, dating back to the 2009-10 season. Hillsdale has advanced far in the last two odd-numbered year conference tournaments, making it to the finals in 2007 and winning the title in 2009. The Chargers finished the regular season No. 2 in the GLIAC in scoring offense, No. 2 in 3-point field goals made and No. 2 in turnover margin. In Saturday’s loss at Wayne State, the Warriors won by one point in a game where they made seven 3-point field goals after averaging four made 3pointers per game all season long. Harrison was one of two players in the GLIAC to score more than 400 points this season (411).

Lake Erie dropped its final two games of the season over the weekend, falling at home to Tiffin (72-48) and on the road at Ashland (78-52)… junior Stephanie Rogers averaged 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in the two games last week and became just the second player in recorded school history with 200 blocked shots (202)… She finished the season as the team leader in minutes, field goals, field goal percentage, free throws, free throw percentage, rebounding, blocked shots, steals, points and scoring average… Rogers’ 107 made free throws rank third on the LEC single-season list, as do her 79 blocked shots… she will head into her senior season with 974 points and 555 rebounds… in her final home game, Storm senior Katelyn Prince scored five points, grabbed seven rebounds and had a career-high five assists against Tiffin… freshman Chrissy Delaney led the Storm with 10 points at Ashland, matching her career high… junior Jen Caiola scored nine points at Ashland Saturday to surpass the 900 mark for her career (908).

Michigan Tech Huskies (23-2, 18-1 GLIAC)

Lake Superior St. Lakers (16-9, 13-6 GLIAC) LSSU scored a season-high 88 points to end the regular-season with a win at Findlay and snap a three-game losing skid. The Lakers made a season-high 13 three-pointers, missing their singlegame school record for three-pointers by one. They also shot a season-high 68.5 percent from the field. Senior guard Nicole Marshall (Frankfort, Mich.) scored a career-high 27 points to lead LSSU, while junior forward Sarah Cubr (Riverview, Mich.) came off the bench to add a career-high 11 points. The Lakers enter the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and play host to Hillsdale during Wednesday’s quarterfinal round. Senior guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored 27 points to lead the Lakers to a 78-71 victory over the Chargers on Dec. 11 in Sault Ste. Marie. LSSU is hosting a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time since 2005. Wednesday’s contest will pit two of the GLIAC’s top three scorers against each other. Hillsdale’s Chelsea Harrison leads the league in scoring at 17.0 ppg, while Joseph is third at 16.5 ppg. Joseph and Harrison are also ranked among the top 10 in assists. LSSU junior center Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.) leads the GLIAC in field-goal percentage at .638, while Hillsdale’s Laura Barczak is fourth at .535.

Michigan Tech will make its 21st consecutive appearance in the GLIAC Tournament this week. The Huskies are the only team in the GLIAC to have played in every league tournament since its inception in 1991. Northern Michigan (17) has the second-most appearances … Lucy Dernovsek (Holcombe, Wis./Lake Holcombe) registered a career-high in rebounds with 15 at Northwood. She also had 13 points in the game for her seventh double-double of the year … Angela Guisfredi (Hubbell, Mich./Lake Linden-Hubbell) made 4-of-6 3-pointers last week to improve her season percentage to 55.2—nearly 10 percent better than the second-best shooter in the league … Kim Cameron is 23-2 in her first season as a head coach for a 92.0 winning percentage …The Huskies enter the postseason on a 10-game winning streak, with their last loss coming Jan. 20 at Ferris State … With a win on Wednesday (Mar. 2) vs. Tiffin, Michigan Tech would host the GLIAC Final Four for a fourth straight season … Tech’s senior class finished their GLIAC careers with a 70-11 record in league games and four GLIAC North Division titles.

Northern Michigan Wildcats (12-14, 7-12 GLIAC)

Northwood Timberwolves (14-11, 10-9 GLIAC)

NMU finished the 2010-11 season on the road, splitting a pair of games with GLIAC North opponents. NMU won its third conference game in a row with a (69-58) win over Northwood on Thursday (Feb. 24). The ‘Cats ended the season with a (55-45) loss at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 26). NMU made 25 of its 31 free throws against Northwood, including 17 in the final 1:35. Junior forward Chelsea Lyons scored 35 points on the week with 14 coming from the charity stripe. Senior guard Steffani Stoeger scored 25 to end her career. Stoeger finished her career with 1,033 points, good for 22nd on NMU’s career scoring list. She also ended her career with 199 steals, making her second on that list. Erin Powers ended her career with 462 rebounds, placing her 20th on the all-time rebounding list. Jaclyn Davey, Kellie Rietveld and Callie Youngman also played their last game as Wildcats. NMU finished the season 12-14 overall and 7-12 in the GLIAC. The ‘Cats finished the season strong, winning four of their last six games.

Northwood dropped its final two regular season games last week, falling at home to Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech . The Timberwolves finished the regular season 14-11 overall, 10-9 in the GLIAC. NU is the No. 6 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will travel to Grand Valley State Wednesday night. Pam Wilson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) led Northwood in scoring for the week, averaging 12.5 points per game. She finished the regular season leading the GLIAC in scoring (17.2 ppg) while ranking second in the league in rebounding (8.9 rpg). Wilson ranks seventh in Northwood in school history in scoring (1,290 points) while ranking 10th in rebounding (553). Northwood has split with Grand Valley State in each of the last three seasons. the Timberwolves have won their last two matchups against the Lakers in Allendale.

Ohio Dominican Panthers (7-19, 5-14 GLIAC)

Saginaw Valley St. Cardinals (8-18, 5-14 GLIAC)

After a disappointing 64-44 setback to Ashland in their final home game on Thursday, the Panthers concluded their inaugural season at the Division II level on a high note, knocking off Tiffin on the road 70-66 in the season finale. With the win, ODU’s finished the season 7-19 overall and 5-14 in the GLIAC. After struggling from the charity stripe over the last seven games, ODU shot its second best percentage of the year going 12-of-14 (85.7 percent), including a crucial 10-of-12 in the second. The Panthers held Tiffin to just 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from long range to move back into first place in the GLIAC in 3-pt.field goal percentage defense. Meredith Fox (Jr./Springboro, OH) led the Panthers in scoring both games last week, averaging 14.0 points per game, including a season-high 18 in ODU’s season finale victory at Tiffin. She finished the year reaching double digits in the last sixth outings and eighth time in the final nine games.

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball team split a pair of GLIAC contests to close-out its 2010-11 season. The Lady Cardinals opened the weekend with a 64-54 loss to Michigan Tech on Thursday. Against the Huskies, Brittany Burkhardt had 12 points and six rebounds while Jasmine Kennedy added 10 points and five rebounds. SVSU would end its season with a a 55-45 victory over the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday. Kristen Greene had 14 points and four rebounds for the Cardinals while Cheritee Green had nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Cardinals finish the 2010-11 campaign with an 8-18 overall record while posting a 5-14 mark in GLIAC play.

Tiffin Dragons (15-11, 9-10 GLIAC)

Wayne State Warriors (10-16, 9-10 GLIAC)

The Dragons raced out to a 43-15 lead in the first half and never looked back as Tiffin defeated Lake Erie 72-48 Feb 24. Karli Mast led the Dragons with 18 points while Mandy Jaeb added 14. Jessica Harris added a team-high eight rebounds in only 19 minutes played…It was the second-lowest points total for a first half for a TU opponent this season and the second-largest advantage at the intermission of a game this season for the Dragons…Tiffin opened its game against Ohio Dominican allowing 12 unanswered points before ultimately falling 70-66 in a hardfought battle. Mandy Jaeb totaled 18 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists to lead TU, while Karli Mast had 14 points. Jessica Harris posted a doubledouble with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Holly Focke also had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists with 5 steals…The Dragons qualified for the GLIAC tourney for the first time in school history with their win over Lake Erie. They have also posted 15 wins so far this season, their most wins since 1995.

The Wayne State University women’s basketball team concluded its 2010-11 campaign with an exciting 76-75 triumph over Hillsdale College on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Lena Thomas hit a baseline jumper that fell with 4.6 seconds left giving WSU the lead. Thomas received a feed from sophomore Amelia Davis after she grabbed an offensive rebound. The Chargers had a chance to win but Lea Jones’ baseline jumper hit the rim and sophomore guard Paige Sickmiller grabbed the rebound to seal the win. The contest featured eight lead changes in each half, plus a total of seven ties. The Warriors won for the sixth time in the last 10 contests with a thrilling comefrom-behind 56-54 triumph over Lake Superior State (159 overall, 12-6 GLIAC). Sickmiller tallied the game-winning bucket from just outside the right elbow with three seconds left. The Lakers were ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Midwest Regional poll. The Warriors, after being held without a field goal for 7:30 and trailing by 15 (48-33), went on a 23-6 scoring spurt over the final 8:30 for the victory.
