THREE RECEIVE NCAA INVITATIONS
For the first time since 2012, three WIAC teams will participate in the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship. UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater received two of the 21 at-large bids into the 64-team field, while UW-River Falls earned an automatic bid by winning the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver’s). All first round games will be held on March 3 with second round matchups taking place on March 4. UW-River Falls (24-3) is making the third NCAA appearance in program history and will host Bethel University (Minn.) (21-6) in a first round contest. Also competing in River Falls will be Benedictine University (Ill.) (23-4) and Wartburg College (Iowa). UW-Whitewater (21-6) will also host first and second round contests. The Warhawks, who are making their 21st postseason appearance and fifth in the last six years, will meet University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) (20-7) in their opening game. The other first round matchup will feature Augustana College (Ill.) (19-8) and University of St. Thomas (Minn.) (19-7). UW-Oshkosh (17-10) will travel to Holland, Mich., and square off against Hope College (Mich.) (21-6) in the first round. The Titans are making their second straight – and seventh overall – NCAA appearance. Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) (20-5) and Ripon College (Wis.) (20-5) will also participate in Holland. Conference teams have combined to win 12 NCAA Division III championships with UWWhitewater earning championships in 1984, 1989, 2012 and 2014.
