These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today’s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or, offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities.

MAKE IT REAL

Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They’ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year.

JUMP UP!

“Jump Up!” is an activity that uses listening and gross motor movements to introduce the idea of light and dark. WHAT YOU NEED: A flashlight (optional) WHAT YOU DO: During the activity: Instruct the children to jump up when the lights are on and lie down when the lights are off. Once you have done this a few times, tell the kids to also shout the word “light” when they jump up and whisper the word “dark” when they lie down. (Option: Turn a flashlight on and off in place of the classroom lights.) WHAT YOU SAY: Before the activity: “Who’s ready to play a fun game? (Pause.) I am! All you have to do is jump up high when the lights are on and lie down on the floor when the lights are off. Got it? (Pause.) Let’s see if we can do this”. (Turn lights on and off a few times.) During the activity: “Awesome! Okay, now we’re going to add something new. We’re going to shout the word ‘light’ when the lights are on and whisper the word ‘dark’ when the lights are off. Here we go!” (Play as long as children are interested.) After the activity: “That was fun! And guess what our Bible story is about today! (Shout) Light (in your regular voice) and (whispering) dark!”

DAY AND NIGHT

“Day and Night” is a game that uses sorting skills to introduce children to light and dark. WHAT YOU NEED: “Day/Night” from the Activity Pages found on the Website, white cardstock, scissors, a piece of black construction paper, and a piece of yellow construction paper WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Copy the “Day/Night” Activity Page onto white cardstock. Cut out the pictures. During the activity: Help kids identify the pictures on the cards and when they take place (light or dark; day or night). Place the cards on the yellow construction paper if the activities take place in the light. Place the cards on the black construction paper if the activities take place in the dark. Repeat as desired. WHAT YOU SAY: During the activity: “Look at all these pictures. What do you see? (Pause.) I see someone kicking a soccer ball. Do you play soccer when it’s light outside or dark outside? (Pause.) Yes, soccer is played when it’s light outside. Let’s put it on the yellow paper because it happens when it’s light outside. Oh, this is a picture of someone tucked into bed. Do we go to sleep when it’s light or dark outside? (Pause.) Dark— that’s right! Let’s put this card on the black paper because we do this when it’s dark outside.” (Continue with all the cards.) After the activity: “We are going to hear a fantastic story today about what God made on the very first day of Creation! It’s such an exciting story! I can’t wait for you to hear it!”

CREATION STATION

“Creation Station” is an activity that provides a visual for the children to review the Bible Story. Note: This activity is to be used as a large visual for the children. There are many options that can be used. The Activity Page can be printed as an 8.5x11, 11x17, poster size, or train cars can be created with shoeboxes. The larger your class size, the larger your visual should be. If you choose to make the train cars out of shoeboxes, simply print the Activity Page on an 8.5x11 page and attach it to the bottom of the shoebox so that the bottom of the train car touches the floor when the shoebox is placed on its side. It is ideal to keep the train car that you build with the children each week in June and July so that you can display the entire train during Bible Story Review. If that is not possible, consider displaying the train car you complete each week in the hallway for parents to see that day.

WHAT YOU NEED: “Train Car Review” from the Activity Pages found on the Website, appropriate size white paper for your choice of train car (see above), black and yellow construction paper, scissors, and tape WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Make the train car that you have chosen. Print the Activity Page on the appropriate size paper. Cut out around the train car. If you are using the shoebox, glue or tape the train car to the bottom of the shoebox. If you’re not using a shoebox, tape the train car to the wall or teaching board. Cut the black and yellow construction paper into two-inch squares. Make sure you have a black and a yellow square for each child. During the activity: Have all of the children sit in front of the train car. Give each child a yellow and black square. Call out the following actions: putting on your pajamas, playing outside, reading a bedtime story, and doing yard work. After saying each one of these actions, ask the children to raise either the yellow or black square indicating whether the action is done at nighttime or during the day. Remind them that God made the light. Allow each child to come up and tape their yellow square onto the left side of the car. Then remind them that God made the dark too. Allow each child to a tape their black squares on to the right side of the car.” After the activity: Briefly retell the Bible story using the train car as a visual.

“Light and Dark Sign” is an activity that encourages children to use problem-solving skills to identify what events happen in the light and in the dark. WHAT YOU NEED: Black and yellow construction paper cut into fourths, “Light/ Dark” from the Activity Pages on the Website, Avery labels #5160 or equivalent, craft sticks, scissors, glue, and tape WHAT YOU DO: Before the activity: Copy the “Light/Dark” Activity Page on the labels so each child will have one of each label. During the activity: Give each child a piece of the yellow construction paper. Allow them to put on the label that says, “God made the light,” anywhere on the yellow paper. Help the children tape the top of the craft stick to the bottom of the yellow paper. Give the children a piece of the black paper and allow them to stick the label that says, “God made the dark,” on the black paper. Have them turn the yellow paper that is attached to the craft stick over so that the back of the craft stick is facing up. Help them tape the black paper to the craft stick so that it is directly behind the yellow paper. This will create a sign that has a front and a back. Read the statements below and have the kids turn their signs to show if it applies to “light” or “dark.” WHAT YOU SAY: During the activity: “Today we’re going to make some light and dark signs.
