Wow! It’s the final newsletter of the year. I’m melancholy writing this. I remember last August agonizing over my first President’s letter, wondering if it was too sappy, goofy, or it would be received as I intended. Laura Polido, CAP-OM President
Linda Clark, CAP-OM Vice President
While getting used to being President has taken time, I can say with all honesty, it has been my privilege to be in this position. You have all been my rock and many of you have “talked me down from the ledge” as I obsessed or panicked over something. Your support has meant more to me than I can say; I truly appreciate all the feedback you’ve given me. Even when it was something I didn’t want to hear. I know it sounds like a farewell, but as the 2013-2014 President and even more determined to get you excited about our chapter. We’ve have a GREAT year and I’m looking for one more from everyone! I want you to think about stretching outside your comfort zones, you will not regret you did. I am challenging you to do something you didn’t think you could; whether that is getting your certification, volunteering for a leadership role, becoming a Member of Excellence for the first time, or to start coming to the meetings. I want to encourage each of you to try, you won’t be sorry.

I often quote my sweet momma, and here’s another. She loved to experiment with different veggies, and meats to cook them in different ways to get us to eat. She would tell my brother and me to take one bite to see if we liked it or not. If we tried it and didn’t like it we could then say it, but if we didn’t at least try it, we would miss out on so much good stuff!” She was right. Maybe not about creamed spinach and pickled red beets, but if we don’t try, then we miss so many good things! So take Momma Janet’s advice and try something new. I will see each of you at the June meeting and I would love to hear what you want to try. Have a great summer!! Laura

Update on The Foundation’s Amazing Walk The fundraiser for The Foundation of IAAP, The Amazing Walk, is in the final stage. The Amazing Walk is a virtual race from IAAP headquarters in Kansas City, MO to EFAM 2013 in Anaheim, CA. The journey started April 1, ends June 30 and follows historic Route 66. Every dollar you donate is one virtual mile down the course and another significant step toward helping The Foundation reach its goal of raising $250,000. This is an exciting journey for us as contributions will have a very real impact: helping office professionals get the career training they need to stay relevant, funding research into best practices, and continuing to ensure that your retired colleagues in need have a comfortable home in their golden years. You have until June 30 to make your valuable contribution. Please go to http:// amazingwalk.iaap-foundation.org for further information and to check the individual and chapter rankings. Thank you for your generosity and support. Linda A. Robinson, CAP-OM Illinois Division Foundation Chair Golden Corridor Chapter Foundation Chair
THE CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN A couple of months ago I attended a seminar that was geared towards women. Although the title was The Conference For Women, men and women alike would have benefitted from the teachings of this workshop. The conference had two tracks to choose from, Track One was on Professional Growth and Development and Track Two was on Developing Your Inner Power. The information obtained from this event can easily be applied to both an individual’s professional and personal lives. A tip presented at the conference was how to verbally express anger in a constructive manner, instead of speaking with emotion, speak in a voice tone that one would use for “Please pass the salt”. In conjunction with that tip, we were taught that before we talk to people “Do not have a full balloon of air, release the air from the balloon then stop, pause, and breathe”. Another useful tip taught was, B.I.T.C.H. which stands for Best I Take Charge Here. Meaning to make confident decisions based on the information and facts to be true at the time. Keep a victory log for each time a good decision is made and as the log grows so will your confidence. Other useful tidbits presented were that Practice Makes Permanent, Quality Not Quantity, and Progress Not Perfection. Be clear in what you want, look forward, stay grateful and do inspired actions. Overall, I believe any person attending this event would have benefitted from its teachings and tidbits, coming away with a more positive outlook on work and home life by learning ways to refocus one’s attention to remain focused and optimistic.
