Mr. Joseph A. Bernardi ‘58 Men’s Basketball (Posthumously)
• Joseph A. Bernardi was a standout performer on the basketball court during his time at Iona College which included the 1955-56, 1956-57, and 1957-58 basketball seasons. Joseph joins the Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame as the 26th Iona College Men’s Basketball player or coach to receive the ultimate athletic honor bestowed by the College. Joseph’s time at Iona took place under the leadership and coaching guidance of the late Jim McDermott. • Joseph was the second Men’s Basketball player in Iona College Athletics History to reach the 1,000 career point mark. In 1958 when Joseph concluded his impressive campaign as a Gael only the great Richard Guerin ’54 stood ahead of him on the all-time career scoring list. (1,375) Joseph currently ranks 30th all-time in scoring with1,029 points. • Joseph led the Gaels in scoring during his three seasons in Maroon and Gold. In addition, he was the team leader in field goal percentage during the 1955-56 and 195657 seasons with .450 and .460 percentages. Joseph was also at the helm in free throws percentage during the 1955-56 and 1956-57 seasons with .725 and .661 percentage of free throws made. • On December 18, 1956, Joseph scored 30 points in a match-up against Hofstra. Following up that great performance, Joseph scored 34 points on January 5, 1957 against Xavier. The 34 point burst ranked him fourth all-time behind Richard Guerin’s 40, 38, and 36 point games in 1955 and 1954. During his 1957-58 senior campaign Joseph helped guide the Gaels to an 18-6 overall record. • During the 1956 season Joseph made 166 free throws. At the time this ranked him second all-time, only eleven behind the current leader Richard Guerin (177). Similar to his free throws attempts, Joseph ranked second all-time in 1956 with 229 attempts. Currently Joseph stands sixth all time in the single season records for free throws made and free throws attempted. In addition Joseph currently ranks eighth all-time in free throws attempts (547) and tenth all-time in free throws made (377).
Ms. Alison N. Higgs ‘05 Women’s Softball
• One of the top all-around players in Iona softball history, Alison Higgs completed a stellar career with the Gaels in 2005. Higgs finished her career at Iona among the Top 10 in virtually every offensive category and top five in every pitching category. She is the all-time leader in at-bats (522) and hits (164, tied) while standing as the number two home run hitter in school history (17, tied). In addition Alison is the second all-time leader in runs. Higgs is also number five all time in games-played (164), doubles (33), and runs batted in (68, tied). • On the mound the southpaw appeared in 96 games, good for second all-time in school history, while also leading in victories (51), ERA (1.34), and shutouts (15). Higgs is second all-time in strikeouts (512), innings pitched (538.0), and winning percentage (.630). Additionally Alison finished third all-time in complete games (58), saves (2, tied), and strikeout ratio (.95), and fourth in games started (67). • During the 2004 campaign Alison set single season records in hits (60), games pitched (38), victories (22), games started (30), complete games (30), saves (2-tied) and innings pitched (219.1). Higgs also currently ranks second all time in single season winning percentage (.720) and shutouts (6). • A standout on the field, Alison was named the 2004 MAAC Softball Player of the Year after a career season as a junior. Other accolades include 2004 All-Northeast Region Second Team Honors, and 2002 Second Team All-MAAC honors, as well as an NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete for her performance in the classroom. Prior to Iona, Higgs was a three sport letter winner in softball, soccer, and basketball at South Hagerstown High School located in Hagerstown, MD. Her high school accolades included being named two-time All-County Player of the Year and All-Area Player of the Year following her senior season. • Higgs graduated Cum Laude from Iona College Hagan School of Business in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and obtained her Master’s of Business Administration from Jacksonville University in May 2009.
Mr. Patrick G. Lyons ‘96, ‘00MS, ‘04MBA Golf, Hockey, Coach, Administrator, Athletic Director
• After a career as a standout student-athlete and dedicated administrator, Patrick Lyons entered his seventh year as Director of Athletics at Iona College in 2010-11. During his tenure, he established the Iona College athletics department as one of the top programs in the MAAC, while continuing efforts to become a nationally respected program whiling striving for a 100% graduation rate among Iona’s student-athletes. In February 2011, Seton Hall University announced the appointment of Patrick G. Lyons as Director of Athletics. • A native of Providence, RI, Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the

1995-96 season, totaling 28 goals in 25 games. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. From 1997-99, Lyons served as a graduate assistant, working closely with former Athletics Director and Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs Rich Petriccione. • As a coach, Lyons led the golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-2002, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons. The team also won eight tournaments while maintaining one of the highest GPA’s for any male team at Iona. Lyons also served as assistant hockey coach from 1997-2000. As the top assistant, Lyons expanded Iona’s recruiting base and helped guide the Maroon & Gold to the 1999 MAAC Hockey League Championship game. • The seventh Athletic Director in Iona College history, Lyons served as the chief administrator for the Athletic Department and its 21 NCAA Division I athletic programs. After 13 years of service, the 1996 Iona graduate has worn virtually every hat within the athletics department since he stepped foot on campus as a freshman in the fall of 1992. Lyons brought a first-hand understanding of the integral roles that student-athletes, coaches, and administrators possess. At the time of his appointment in the summer of 2004, Lyons became the youngest Division I Athletic Director in the country. • The athletic department saw unprecedented growth under Lyons’ seven year tenure both on and off the field. Lyons has had his greatest impact on the department’s fundraising and improvements of various athletic facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. In addition, Lyons currently serves on several committees at the national and conference levels.
Mr. C. Ronald Pascale ‘71 Cross Country / Track & Field
• C. Ronald Pascale attended Iona College from 1967-71 as a member of the Cross Country and Track & Field programs and was regarded as one of the best middle distance runners in the country during his tenure. Ron captained both the Cross Country and Track & Field programs during his senior campaign in 1971, a year highlighted by being named the Joseph O’Connell award recipient, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete. • Beginning his freshman year Ron singlehandedly established Iona Track & Field as an elite program, personally tying previous school records in the Metropolitan 440 yard run and breaking the school record in the 880 yard event. An accident in the summer of 1969 nearly ended his running career at Iona, but his legacy was already established. The varsity records he broke included the mile relay anchor leg outdoors in the Metropolitan Mile Relay on Franklin Field at the Penn relays (47.4) - the relay team of Bode, Farrell, Jackomitz and Pascale was victorious that day; 600 yard indoors at the Yale Invitational (1:11.2 - still held to this day); and the 880 yard outdoors at the 1970 Quantico, VA Relays. (1:50.2) Ronald scored in the International AAU 600 yard run, and was the first Iona runner to score in an ICAAAA meet. He also earned AAU All American honors for the 600 yard run. • The announcer at Madison Square Garden during The Knights of Columbus Meet in 1971 summed up the climax of Iona’s Thinclads, proclaiming “Winner of the Downing Half-Mile in 1:57.-Ron Pascale of Iona”. For Ron Pascale, this announcement marked the beginning of the end of four years, of hard work, and dedication, culminating in less than two minutes. • In addition, Ron was a member of the Spiked Shoe Club throughout each of his four years as a Gael, being named president of the club in his junior and senior campaigns. Ron was named the winner of the Spiked Shoe Club award during his freshman year, given to the most outstanding runner. During his time at Iona Ron was a member of the Sigma Delta Phi fraternity, named secretary his junior year and court justice his senior year. Ron was also a member of the Club Activities Board throughout his junior year. • Graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, during an era where there were many political upheavals distracting Iona College students from athletics, Ron paced forward with the legacy and history that is, Iona College Cross Country / Track & Field.

2011 Donald E. Walsh ‘66 Award Mr. John J. Judge ‘71 & Mrs. Monica L. Judge ‘70 Iona College Athletics is once again proud to announce the addition of the Don Walsh Award to the Iona College Hall of Fame Golf Outing. This award will be presented annually by the Iona College Goal Club to an individual who has demonstrated loyal support and service to Iona College Athletics through exceptional volunteerism.
