HONORING Bill “SPEEDY” MORRIS The Friends of Bill Raftery Committee and the La Salle Athletic Department are pleased to honor Bill “Speedy” Morris on the 11th anniversary of this terrific event. It goes without saying that Morris’s keep-it-simple, tough-love, take-no-prisoners approach to the game led La Salle men’s basketball to one of the best eras in program history. Morris spent 15 seasons as the head men’s basketball coach of the Explorers (1986 –2001), compiling a school record 238 wins. His teams reached the postseason six times, including four NCAA appearances, and won four MAAC Championships. His best season came in 1989–90, when he and National Player of the Year Lionel Simmons led La Salle to a 30–2 record and a number-12 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. He also compiled a 43–17 record as La Salle’s women’s basketball coach, winning the MAAC Championship and reaching the NCAA Tournament in 1986. This outstanding run of success as both the men’s and women’s coach at La Salle earned Morris a spot in the La Salle Hall of Athletes and the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in 2010. In addition to his success as a college coach, Morris is the most successful Philadelphia high school coach of all time. Currently the coach of St. Joseph’s Prep, Morris has captured more than 900 wins in both his high school and college coaching career. Though he is not finished coaching, in the fall of 2012, Morris was officially nominated to be a candidate for the country’s highest basketball honor, the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
