Science Grade 8 Science 8 None

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In 8th grade, there is an emphasis on Earth science, with an emphasis on the basic Earth features and processes. Students will also study human growth and development including pregnancy, childbirth, and wellness. CONTENT STANDARDS: In order that our students may achieve the maximum benefit from their talents and abilities, the students of Urbandale Community School District’s Grade 8 Science should be able to . . . Content Standard I. Benchmarks:

Understand and apply the concepts of life science. Identify and understand the function of the organs of the male and female reproductive systems. Describe the various life processes and how they impact the earth and its inhabitants.

Content Standard II. Benchmarks:

Understand and apply the concepts of Earth and space science. Demonstrate an understanding of basic Earth processes. Describe Earth’s location in the universe and how it is affected by the moon and sun. Identify characteristics of bodies in space. Recognize the basic features of Earth and the interrelationship of factors that influence the Earth’s climate and weather patterns.

Content Standard III. Understand and apply the concepts of physical science. Not formally addressed Content Standard IV. Understand and apply the concepts of health science. Benchmarks: Identify the fundamental concepts of human growth and development. Content Standard V. Benchmarks:

Understand and apply scientific method. Develop Scientific Process Skills. Utilize the steps of the Scientific Method.

URBANDALE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK OUTLINE SUBJECT: Science COURSE TITLE: Grade 8 Science GRADE LEVEL: 8 PREREQUISITES: None CONTENT STANDARDS AND COURSE BENCHMARKS WITH INDICATORS FOR GRADE 8 SCIENCE Standard I:

Understand and apply the concepts of life science. The students in Grade 8 Science should be able to . . .

Benchmark: Identify and understand the function of the organs of the male and female reproductive systems. Indicators:

Name each organ in the male and female reproductive systems and understand its function. (D) Describe how organs within the male and female reproductive system interact in order to reproduce. (I) Describe the stages the female reproductive system goes through in preparation for childbirth. (A) Describe the stages of labor and delivery. (A)

Assessments: District Assessment Benchmark: Describe the various life processes and how they impact the Earth and its inhabitants. Indicators:

Investigate the properties that make water an essential component of the Earth’s systems. (D) Explain the connection of the hydrological cycle to weather concepts. (A) Identify and describe the main components of the water cycle.

Assessments: District Assessment Standard II: Understand and apply the concepts of Earth and space science. The students in Grade 8 Science should be able to . . . Benchmark: Demonstrate an understanding of basic Earth processes. Indicators:

Name components of soil and other factors that influence soil texture, fertility, and resistance to erosion (e.g., plant roots and debris, bacteria, fungi, worms). (D) Define what minerals are and explain how they form rocks. (D) Identify the fossil fuels as nonrenewable forms of energy. (D) Explain how fossil fuels are formed. (D)

Recognize ways to conserve fossil fuels (from 6th curriculum). (D) Describe how minerals, temperatures, and forces create sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. (D) Explain the processes involved in the rock cycle. (e.g., old rocks at the surface gradually weather and form sediments that are buried, then compacted, heated, and often recrystallized into new rock; this new rock is eventually brought to the surface by the forces that drive plate motions, and the rock cycle continues. (D) Relate the movements in the mantle to the slow movement of the Earth’s crust which is divided into plates. (D) Identify the constructive and destructive forces, which shape landforms. (e.g., earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, natural disasters, deposition of sediments, weathering, erosion). (A) Relate causes to effects of constructive and destructive forces, which shape landforms. [e.g., a cause/effect relationship for a volcanic force could be an eruption of lava being pulled by gravity down the mountain (cause) and the buildup of the land (effect)]. (D) Assessments: District Assessment Benchmark: Describe Earth’s location in the universe and how it is affected by the moon and sun. Indicators:

Determine the importance of the sun to life on Earth. (A) Describe solstice, equinox, tides, and eclipses, along with their direct effects on Earth. (D)

Assessments: District Assessment Benchmark: Identify characteristics of bodies in space. Indicators:

Compare and contrast the planets and their relationship to Earth. (A) Describe asteroids, comets, meteors and the lives of stars. (D) Describe major characteristics of the moon and the sun. (D)

Assessments: District Assessment Benchmark: Recognize the basic features of Earth and the interrelationship of factors that influence the Earth’s climate and weather patterns. Indicators:

List the factors that make Earth the only body in our solar system that appears able to support life. (A) Evaluate the causes and effects of global warming on Earth’s atmosphere. (D) Summarize the composition and structure of Earth’s atmosphere. (D)

Assessments: District Assessment Standard III. Understand and apply the concepts of physical science.

Not formally addressed Standard IV: Understand and apply the concepts of health science. The students in Grade 8 Science should be able to . . . Benchmark: Identify the fundamental concepts of human growth and development. Indicators:

Define personal wellness in terms of the Wellness Triangle (mental, social, physical health). (D) Identify strategies for coping with concerns and stress that occur in adolescence. (D) Identify community resources that are available to assist people with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs problems. (A) Explain the processes of conception, prenatal development, and birth. (I)

Assessments: District Assessment Standard V: Understand and apply the scientific method. The students in Grade 8 Science should be able to . . . Benchmark: Develop Scientific Process Skills. Indicator:

Apply the skills to infer, observe, predict, compare, contrast, measure, analyze, communicate, organize, classify and/or hypothesize in a lab setting. (A)

Assessments: District Assessment Benchmark: Utilize the steps of the Scientific Method. Indicators:

Use appropriate techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret scientific data (e.g., writing a lab report). (A) Apply the components of the scientific method (observe, question, formulate hypothesis, test hypothesis, analyze data, and compare hypothesis). (D)

Assessments: District Assessment
