Grammar Rugby 2014 TGS Rugby Notes - Week Ending 20-7-2014 From the Director of Rugby: Round 15
A warm welcome back to players and their families after what I trust was a relaxing mid-season break. The regular season has six remaining rounds (U10’s have 7, hence the extra fixture this week) followed by three weeks of finals football (for U10 – U17). With finals and squad development in mind, I would now expect to see full commitment to training and fixtures from all players. Players should take responsibility for communicating any absences personally, prior to the event where possible. A reminder from the handbook that selection and substitutions for the finals series is at the coach’s discretion in all age groups. Our regular season policy of players playing for a minimum period of one half every week remains in place for the next six weeks. I urge all players to return to rugby (training and matches) with a clear goal, to play with determination and show pride in our club. See you at the rugby!

Grammar Rugby 2014 Mouthguards
Selection Policy
For obvious reasons, it is compulsory that all players wear a mouthguard for both fixtures and training. All age groups will be following the rule ‘No Mouthguard = No Play’. Failure to bring a mouthguard to training not only disrupts the planned session but may also lead to reduced playing time at the discretion of the team coach and the Director of Rugby. From the TGS Club Rugby Handbook 2014:
“Coaches are responsible for establishing a playing roster, based on initial skill-sets within the group and physical attributes. Coaches will indicate periodically, position specific expectations and assign individual goals for development. Where squads exceed 23 players, match day squads will be selected on rotation (adhering to position specific requirements). Players will ideally play a minimum of one half (perhaps as a half or two quarters) dependent on the following: attitude, training attendance, fitness, position/skill-set or performance. Coaches will keep a record of training attendance and playing time.”
Match Day
Players are required to be at the allocated pitch, ready to start at the given warm-up time. This allows time for the coach to perform an adequate warm-up and prepare the team effectively for the match. All players are to arrive and leave in TGS gold polo (not training shirt), Black TGS rugby shorts, socks, shoes (running shoes or boots are acceptable) and in the case of day matches, a TGS cap or bucket hat. Any compression garments should be black and should be the short version (ie. Short sleeves or half knicks) After the match, players will warm down with their coach to determine if there are any injuries and to debrief. Coaches should be afforded the opportunity to speak to their team without unnecessary distraction before the game, during half-time and immediately after the game.
Handbook
The TGS Rugby Handbook is your most valuable resource for understanding the rugby programme and all post registration requirements. I encourage parents and students to carefully read the information in this book as it contains information for training, fixtures and policies regarding uniform compliance and selection. Please click on the image of the handbook to the left to be re-directed to the school website where the handbook can be downloaded.
Concussion and Serious Injury Policies
Townsville Grammar School (TGS) and the Townsville and District Rugby Union (TDRU) follow the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) and International Rugby Board (IRB) guidelines for serious injury and concussion. It is important that, if after playing, your son shows signs or symptoms of either injury or concussion that either their team coach or the Director of Rugby is informed. Copies of the ARU Medical and Safety Recommendations, ARU Concussion Factsheet and ARU Serious Injury Protocol are available at the TGS website: www.tgs.qld.edu.au/co_curricular/sport/rugby_union Please inform the Director of Rugby via email if a player has been concussed; their graduated return to training must be managed formally and players must then be assessed medically, prior to a return competitive rugby.
Grammar Rugby 2014 Photographs
If parents/players have any Grammar Rugby photographs that they would like to share, please send them through to me and I can share them with the entire Grammar Rugby community. These photographs will also be used at the presentation night at the end of the season.
