Dear Queen’s Rugby Supporter, The team opened training camp on August 30th with over 180 athletes in attendance and had their first game on Labour Day weekend as the varsity team hosted and defeated Dartmouth College 36-0 to claim the Queen’s-Dartmouth Classic. In other activity that weekend, the club also played host to McGill University and there were yet more games. It is an incredibly busy kick-off to the season. This fall sees the rugby club planning for another extremely busy season with as many as eight different teams in action on any one weekend. It is an immense challenge and it wouldn’t happen without the hard work of a great number of coaches especially those that toil in relative obscurity with the non-varsity teams week after week. Speaking of coaches, as many of you are already aware, long-time Head Coach Peter Huigenbos has taken a one-year sabbatical from the day-to-day coaching to be replaced by long-time assistant Gary Gilks. Peter will remain with the team as Performance Analyst and very much involved with the team, but Gary takes the reins, just as he did when Coach Huigenbos was with Rugby Canada during the last World Cup. We wish them the best of luck in the new coaching arrangement.

The OUA season kicked off on September 6th with a 53-0 victory away against Laurier. The team followed that great start with wins over RMC (45-0) and Brock (24-17). It is always a huge moral boost to the players to see alumni at their games, so we hope that whenever possible you get out and cheer on the boys. It is great rugby and always a good time. 2014 QRFC Alumni Weekend We invite all alumni to return to Kingston on Saturday, October 18th to re-live their glory days both on and off the field. The 1st XV will host Western. The official old boy’s game will take place on Nixon Field at 10:00 am immediately followed by lunch at the Quiet Pub. All are welcomed to join either event. If you are interested in playing or attending lunch, please contact Andrew Follwell ([email protected]) to confirm your spot.

Booster Club News This month the executive of the Booster Club approved an allocation of $10,500 to the team to cover this season’s additional costs for field rentals, coaching expenses and some base funding to help the team get to Victoria, BC for the Rugby Canada sponsored University Sevens tournament in March. Fifth Annual Queen’s Rugby Alumni Golf Tournament The Fifth Annual Tournament was held this spring at the Richmond Hill Golf Club the day before the Canada-Scotland International at BMO. We would like to thank tournament organizer Steve Orchard, Steve Jamieson, Andrew Follwell and Luke Follwell for all their hard work in putting together a wonderful event. They were ably supported by Sarah Roth and Jennifer Butchart from Queen’s Athletics and Recreation. Thanks to all who participated, and hopefully all of you will return for next year’s event. The tournament generated over $11,000 for the Booster Fund and was a great opportunity for alumni to reconnect.

For more information on anything we do, please contact any of the Booster Fund Committee members listed below. See you in the fall!
