What Does It Mean to be a Green Belt When you achieve the rank of Green Belt, you have moved from the beginner into the intermediate class. You will begin to Free Spar and more will be expected of you. Now there are many students newer than you are , and you will need to set a good example for them. Green Belt meaning Green signifies the plant’s growth as taekwondo skills are developing: This means that you have now acquired the basic Taekwondo skills that you are now working to develop. Now that you have the basic skills to begin achieving your goals. You must believe in your abilities and inspire yourself to work hard to achieve these goals. At the Green Belt level you will have learned four new patterns. Many students frequently ask, “why must we learn patterns; why not just spar?” Patterns were first developed as a means to practice offensive and defensive moves in a logical sequence. Until recent years when safety equipment was developed, free sparring was not a safe and enjoyable sport. It was too dangerous to use as a regular training technique. Instead, patterns were developed. When you practice your patterns, consider what move your opponent might have made which you are now countering. In this way, patterns can come to life for you and become a much more memorable training experience.

In the Choong Sil Kwan system we study 24 traditional patterns, the Chang Han series, developed by General Choi Hong Hi of Korea, the father of modern Taekwondo. The reason General Choi developed 24 patterns is likened to the 24 hours in a day. Twenty-four represents a complete cycle, his entire life, which he has devoted to the development and spread of Taekwondo. As you can see, patterns are an integral part of our Taekwondo tradition. They also represent our reward as we advance to new ranks. A student is not entitled to learn a pattern until he has achieved the rank associated with the pattern. In order to learn all the patterns, one must attain the rank of 6th degree black belt. This is a lifetime goal!

Study Guide Definition of Green Belt:

Represents the student, like a seedling, beginning to grow.

Discipline:

The ability to do what we should do when other people tell us to do it.

Self discipline:

The ability to do what we should do without anyone telling us.

Choongsil Kwon System of Taekwon-do: We study the Choongsil Kwon system of Taekwon-do which, literally translated, means the gym of constant and never ending improvement. This is more than just a philosophy, it is a way of life which means that the student is shown that through utilizing a definite plan of action, he/she can attain any outcome they desire. It is shown through example that this philosophy can bring the practitioner any lifestyle they wish.

Definition of Won-Hyo:

Won-Hyo was the noted monk who introduced Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty in the year 686 A.D. There are 28 moves in this form.

Rank Belts:

Rank belts are tied evenly to represent a balance between our mental and physical actions. Belts are tied in a square knot for neatness and strength.

Vital Spots:

Temple, Eyes, Bridge of the Nose, Side of neck, Base of throat, armpits, solar plexus, pit of stomach, kidneys, groin

Vital Spots: Study Guide

6

Sidekicks Family Martial Arts Centers, Inc. | Green Belt, Level 1 Curriculum

VITAL SPOTS A Vital spot in Taekwondo is defined as any sensitive or breakable area on the body vulnerable to an attack. It is essential that a student of Taekwondo has a knowledge of the different sports so that he can use the proper attacking or blocking tool. Indiscriminate attack is inefficient and wasteful of energy.

PROPER ATTACKING TOOLS In Taekwondo, the uses of the attacking tools against the vital spots are decided on a scientific basis, according to the structure of the human body. If the student knows how and where to use each tool, he or she should be able to achieve the desired result with a minimum of expended energy. The following list should help the student to use the correct attacking tool against the proper target RELATION OF ATTACKING TOOL AND VITAL SPOTS

Free Sparring Once the student has advanced to the Green Belt level, he or she is allowed to begin to Free Spar. In order to ensure the safety of our students, all are required to purchase safety gear through the school for their hands, feet, head and mouth. Male students are required to wear a groin protector and it is recommended that female students wear chest protectors. Students will not be allowed to spar without the necessary safety equipment. We begin free sparring with a limited selection of techniques. The first sparring set is the lead leg set. This allows the student to develop his front leg sidekick, front leg hook kick and front leg round kick, singly and in combination. In addition, the student may use the jab and reverse punch to the head (no contact) and body to set up kicks. At this first stage of sparring, it is very important that the student learn to control his or her techniques, develop blocking skills, and generally familiarize himself with free sparring. Only after the student has demonstrated sufficient progress in these areas will the instructor begin to allow the use of the spin sidekick, spin heel kick and the spin hook kick in sparring. As a student, it is always fun to spar. However, we must learn to control our actions and to use a variety of techniques. Because these are both so difficult, we must start developing them at the Green Belt level in order to advance to Black Belt. It is important for each student to practice “Respect of Technique” while sparring. Control is use to learn to deliver techniques quickly but with light touch in contrast to a full power hit. The student should understand that their partner is also using control and acknowledge potentially damaging techniques by not continuing his or her attack. This is “Respect of Technique” or maybe better referred to as “Respect of Your Partner’s Control of Power”. The front and sides of the body above the “belt” are approved target areas for hand and foot techniques in all ranks. The head is an approved target for light contact kicks and non-contact punches. All other parts of the body except arm and leg blocking areas are unapproved target areas. (NOTE: face mask, neck or groin areas may not be targeted). Sweep/take-downs are not allowed until Black Belt and then only with the Chief Instructors permission. Free sparring demonstrations are also required as part of the Green Belt Testing procedure. The purpose of free sparring at testing is not to score points on your opponent but rather to demonstrate your proficiency in a variety of techniques and assist your partner in doing the same.

Won-Hyo Wonhyo (617 – 686 A.D.) was born from a noble family of Sol in the vicinity of the Silla Capital city Sorabol (now Kyongju). It is believed that he had his hair shaved and became a Buddhist monk at the age of fifteen. A Koryo Buddhist monk Iryon, relates that when Wonhyo became a monk he made his old home a Buddhist temple, Ch’ogae-sa (literally “temple first opened). From his childhood name Sodang it is surmised that the name Wonhyo is a Chinese character rendering of the indigenous Korean name, probably meaning “dawn” or “morning glory”. Such a name is appropriate since Wonhyo’s achievement is exactly comparable to the dawn of the Korean Buddhism.

Wonhyo was active during the turbulent historic period of the unification war among the Three Kingdoms in seventhcentury Korea. Considering the adversity of the time and the scarcity of materials, it is remarkable that Wonhyo could master the advanced Buddhist theories and spread Buddhism to the masses. Although he is revered as the founder of the uniquely Korean Buddhist sect Haedong-jong, he is known more for his vision and passionate involvement in Buddhist practice. He is considered to be the most important seminal philosopher and religious practitioner in the history of Korean philosophy.

Testing

Congratulations! You have worked hard and have received an invitation to test. Testing is an important part of our teaching program. You must be sure that you are prepared by learning all your patterns, definitions, drills and self-protection. This manual is designed to help prepare you for testing as well. In addition, at Green Belt and above, you will be expected to demonstrate what you have learned regarding free-sparring. At Blue Belt and above, you will be expected to participate in a power demonstration by breaking wood. Be sure you have discussed your breaking techniques with your instructor prior to the testing. Wood is provided at the testing. Come a little early to allow time to warm up prior to the testing and ask any last minute questions that you may have. Remember, this is a formal occasion and requires that you wear your traditional white uniform! You know that you are eligible for testing when you receive a testing invitation letter. You will need to register in advance of the testing date. To register turn in the completed invitation along with your testing fee to the office. Testing is a very special occasion and a great time to demonstrate to your family and friends how much you have achieved! Be sure to bring them with you to the testing.

Good Luck!
