1.
What is a disciple? A person who learns about, follows, and lives for Jesus.
2.
How does copying Jesus’ life help form you into the person God made you to be? Copying Jesus gets me used to saying yes to God’s ways and no to sin.
3.
Will it always feel good when God forms you into the person He made you to be? Why not? No. God squishes all the sins, bad attitudes, and wrong thinking out of you when He forms you. If you’re used to those bad things, sometimes it hurts when He squishes them out of you.
4.
Read 1 Peter 2:21 out loud. If you might have to suffer to follow Jesus, is it worth it? Why or why not? Yes. It gets you ready to do amazing things that you’ll love to do, and that will help other people follow Jesus, too.
5.
Think about the activity we did earlier. How would you feel if your clay kept fighting you instead of letting you form it? Answers will vary.
6.
If you choose not to let God form you, will He give up? Why or why not? No. God loves me and wants me to be the person He made me to be.
To Do 1.
Practice the Verse and the Point together.
Say: We saw a potter forming clay in the Bible story. Now, we’ll be potters, too! 2.
Give each kid a plate to work on.
3.
Hold up one ball of clay.
Say: Here’s the clay! For 30 seconds, think of something you could make using the clay. It can be a cube, a crocodile, anything! You’re the potter. Think of what you want to make. 4.
Kids think for 30 seconds.
5.
Pick a couple of kids to share what they’re going to make.
Apply To This Week
Say: Those are great ideas! Wait. Hold on a minute … 6.
Hold the clay up to your ear and pretend to listen to it.
Say: Uh, oh. The clay has told me it doesn’t want to be squished into any of those things. It just wants to be a blob of clay forever, because getting squished and formed might hurt!
1.
What are three things Jesus did that you can copy this week? Answers will vary.
2.
What books of the Bible can you read this week to find out more ways you can copy Jesus and live like Him? Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
3.
Is there a person you want to be like? If you copy them this week, will you be showing you are a disciple of Jesus? Why or why not? Answers will vary.
4.
What if someone hurts you or makes fun of you this week for being Jesus’ disciple? What can you do to stay strong and keep copying Jesus, anyway? Pray. Ask God to keep filling me with the power to obey Him and live like Jesus. Talk to a friend that is a good disciple, too.
Ask: Is that a great attitude? No Say: You’re right. It’s ridiculous for clay to fight with the potter, just like it’s silly for us to tell God we don’t want Him to turn us into the great people He made us to be! Let’s help this clay out and turn it into what it’s meant to be! 7.
Give each kid a 1” ball of clay.
8.
Kids create something from the clay.
9.
Kids take their creation home in a resealable plastic bag.
10. Kids clean hands with wet wipes.
Bonus 1.
!
Kids share and explain their creations with the group.
!
Please do not cover questions on back until small group discussion time.
Pray: God, thank You for giving us Your Son, Jesus, as an example to copy. Please fill us with more of Your power each day as You form us into the people You made us to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
